Jay-Z was honored with the Dr Dre Global Impact Award at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in honor of his cultural contributions. Following a brief video montage, Hov walked up to the stage to receive the award, with his daughter Blue Ivy joining him as his 1997 hit “Where I’m From” blared from the speakers. Wearing a black suit, the rap legend began his speech by thanking The Recording Academy for acknowledging him with the Global Impact Award.
Jay-Z also expressed the criticisms that Black music artists have had over the years regarding feeling “robbed” of awards, including the fact that his wife, Beyoncé, has never won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year, despite having more Grammy Awards than any artist in history. “We wanna get it right,” he said of The Recording Academy’s voting process. “Obviously it’s subjective because its opinion based.” The mogul then urged his fellow Black creatives to “keep showing up, not just in music, but in life.”

South African singer Tyla has received the first award for the newly introduced Best African Music Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The talented singer, with her mega-hit song “Water” received the award for Best African Music Performance at the 66th edition of the Grammys in a category she was nominated in alongside top Nigerian stars such as Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, Ayra Starr, and others. This is a huge win for the singer, as this was her first nomination for the Grammy Award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards didn’t go well for Nigerian Afrobeats celebrities like Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, Olamide, and Asake, as they lost all nominations. Despite having 10 nominations in five categories, they didn’t win any. In the “Best African Music Performance” category, they lost to South African singer Tyla for her song “Water.” The 2024 Grammy Awards were announced before the main show at the Grammy Premiere ceremony.

Michelle Obama has earned her second Grammy Award, now matching her husband Barack Obama. Michelle Obama won best audiobook, narration, and storytelling for “The Light We Carry: Overcoming In Uncertain Times,” on Sunday beating out Meryl Streep, Senator Bernie Sanders, William Shatner, and Rick Rubin. The win occurred during the 2024 Grammys pre-show, where most awards were handed out. Michelle Obama wasn’t in attendance.
The former first lady won her first Grammy in the same category for her memoir, “Becoming.” Barack Obama won his Grammys for best spoken word album with “Dreams from My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream.”
5. AFCON 2023: South Africa Beat Cape Verde To Face Nigeria In Semifinal Clash
The last time South Africa played in the semi-finals of AFCON was February 2000.

The Bafana Bafana of South Africa will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the semifinal of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament after the former thrashed Capo Verde 2-1 on penalties late Saturday night. The 90-minute regular time was barren, with an additional 30 minutes of extra time producing no goal for either of the hard-fighting sides.
In a breath-taking penalty shootout, Capo Verde lost its first three consecutive penalties, including the fifth one, scoring only the fourth one. In contrast, South Africa only lost two and couldn’t take the last one as it was immaterial.
