Tommy Hilfiger Gives American Prep a Fresh New Shape for Spring 2027

Tommy Hilfiger took over the Plaza Hotel for his Spring 2027 runway show, presenting what may be his most personal collection in years. The Plaza holds deep significance for Hilfiger; he and his wife, Dee, made their home there, high above Central Park, for more than a decade, creating a duplex penthouse within the hotel. Returning to the address which shaped much of his adult life, the designer used the setting as both a setting and a creative anchor, framing a collection built entirely around the tension between what he has always done and what it looks like when reimagined for now.

The result was a show that understood its own history without being trapped by it. Classic prep silhouettes were modernized through proportion, color, and fabrication, with the signature red, white, and blue palette refreshed alongside vivid yellows and vibrant greens. With preppy and Americana dominating the fashion conversation right now, Hilfiger had every reason to reissue the greatest hits and collect the cultural credit. He did not. “We’re making the classics more modern and more relevant for today,” he said. “We’ve taken our heritage pieces from the archive and decided to give them a new beginning, a new life. Proportion-wise, it’s different; fabric-wise, it’s different, but the concept is the same.”

The Collection: Familiar Codes, Rewritten

The silhouettes told the story most clearly. Denim and varsity jackets arrived shrunken, while shorts went micro, cropped short and cut extra baggy for everyone. Polos were oversized, rugbys were reworked in washed silk, and Hilfiger brought back his signature sailing jackets in bright yellow and red, the latter rendered in a striking combination of suede, leather, and waterproof technical material. It was the kind of piece that reads as both functional and directional, the sort of outerwear that will end up on mood boards for the next two seasons.

Accessories followed the same logic: enormous totes built for real use, bucket hats in patchwork and tartan that felt fresh rather than derivative, and a reissued skater sneaker from the 1990s that will satisfy both the nostalgia crowd and the new generation discovering the brand for the first time. One of the collection’s most striking individual pieces was a long silk dress printed with a recreation of Hilfiger’s famous 1985 Times Square hangman billboard. This campaign introduced the then-unknown designer alongside Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Perry Ellis as one of the four great American designers of the moment. Wearing it as a dress forty years later is a quiet act of self-awareness that lands exactly right.

Guests watched the runway show from cushioned green armchairs arranged throughout the hotel’s carpeted lobby. Gigi Hadid opened in a classic beige blazer, silk striped shirt, and oversized red trousers. Romeo Beckham closed in a tartan crop jacket, button-down, graphic knit tie, and Bermuda shorts, a look that summarized the collection’s entire proposition in a single outfit.

Hilfiger’s surprise performer was Slayyyter, who performed two of her biggest tracks, “Unknown Loverz” and “DANCE,” to a live band while the crowd responded with the kind of energy that runway shows rarely generate. The front row included Kate Moss, Camila Cabello, and newlyweds Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordyn Woods. “Fashiontainment to me is everything,” Hilfiger said. He calls the framework FAMES, and Spring 2027 delivered on all five counts.

A New Chapter For Tommy Hilfiger

Hilfiger turned the familiar inside out this season, keeping the codes while dismantling the proportions, the fabrications, and the context in which those codes have always operated. “We still have a very youthful customer,” he said. “Their needs are changing because they love oversized, they love relaxed, but they still want some sort of traditional vibe.” That balance is harder to strike than it sounds, and Spring 2027 makes it look effortless.

“For 40 years, I’ve been inspired by the style of New Yorkers, how the people of the city take the classics and make them their own,” Hilfiger said. Spring 2027 makes that idea literal: a designer taking his own classics and doing the same thing, on his own terms, in the building he once called home.

The Tommy Hilfiger Spring/Summer 2027 collection will officially release during the Spring 2027 retail season.
