1. Tiwa Savage releases tracklist for new album titled ‘Celia’

Internationally known singer and songwriter, Tiwa Savage announced that her album, ‘Celia‘ will be released on August 28, 2020, and with this announcement, she also released the tracklist. The 12-track album will feature homegrown artists like Davido, Naira Marley, Hamzaa and Dice Ailes, and also international artists like Sam Smith and Stefflon Don.

The announcement was made on Tiwa Savage’s social media platforms with a picture of the tracklist for Celia. Earlier singles like Koroba and Dangerous Love made the cut while singles like 49-99, Shotan, Owo Mi Da, and Attention didn’t make the album.

2. Soldiers seize Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta

Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta has been arrested by mutinying soldiers, a government spokesman has confirmed. Prime Minister Boubou Cissé has also been arrested, despite earlier appeals for brotherly dialogue.

The apparent coup attempt in the West African nation began with gunfire at a key military camp near the capital, Bamako, on Tuesday morning. In the city young men set a government-owned building on fire. It comes hours after disgruntled junior officers detained commanders and took control of the Kati camp, about 15km (nine miles) from Bamako.

The mutiny has been condemned by regional group ECOWAS, the African Union, and former colonial power France. The unrest coincides with calls for more protests to demand that the president resign.

3. South Africa: Corruption-accused Zandile Gumede sworn into KZN legislature

Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede – who is facing high-profile charges of corruption relating to R400 million worth of Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender fraud while she was still in office as mayor – has been sworn in as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) legislature on Wednesday, August 19.

Gumede is currently out on R50 000 bail, with her case having been postponed until September due to lockdown disruptions, but is now being installed as a direct replacement for the late Ricardo Mthembu in the KZN provincial legislature.

She will fill in for the late Mthembu by assuming the Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) portfolio in the province and took her oath in vowing to uphold the integrity of the office she now assumes.

4. California declares state of emergency as it fights fires, extreme weather

Coastal Northern California residents threatened by raging lightning-sparked fires were ordered to evacuate on Wednesday, authorities said, as flames continued to rage out of control.

A series of evacuation orders for residents across Santa Cruz County were issued by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) just before dawn, telling them to leave or take refuge at county fairgrounds in Watsonville, which is about 40 miles south of downtown San Jose.

Hours earlier, just before midnight, Cal Fire also ordered evacuations in neighboring San Mateo County, telling residents there to flee or hunker down at Pescadero High School which is about 40 miles south of San Francisco International Airport.

5. Ronald Koeman: Barcelona name former player as new head coach

Ronald Koeman has been named the new head coach of Barcelona two days after the club sacked Quique Setien. The 57-year-old left his role as Netherlands boss, with two years left on his contract, to sign a two-year deal with the Spanish giants.

He played for Barcelona between 1989 and 1995, helping them to four league titles and the European Cup.

The club also announced Ramon Planes as the new technical director. He was the assistant to Eric Abidal, who left his role as sporting director on Tuesday.
