Paramount Pictures has finalized an exclusive deal with Brad Pitt to reprise his role as global investigator Gerry Lane, while Oscar-winning filmmaker Edward Berger is set to direct the long-delayed sequel, tentatively titled “World War Z 2.”
The announcement brings a 13-year development saga closer to production. Pitt has remained closely involved with the project and reportedly pushed to revive the sequel during his recent collaboration with Berger on the upcoming A24 drama “The Riders.“

The original “World War Z” arrived in 2013 and grossed $540 million worldwide despite its reported production costs and extensive behind-the-scenes issues. The film also underwent major changes to its third act, complicating plans for a follow-up.
Paramount initially hired J.A. Bayona to direct the sequel, but he left the project in 2016. Pitt later brought David Fincher into the picture, with the filmmaker developing his own version of the sequel. That iteration was ultimately abandoned in 2019 after budget disagreements with Paramount.
The project remained dormant for years as the studio shifted its priorities. Paramount’s renewed interest in large-scale, director-driven projects has now given the sequel a path back to development.
Brad Pitt and Edward Berger Reunite
Pitt’s involvement was instrumental in bringing Berger onto the project. The two filmmakers worked together on “The Riders,” which was filmed earlier in 2026. During production, Pitt reportedly discussed his plans for expanding the “World War Z” franchise with Berger.
According to Deadline, those conversations eventually led to Berger taking over as director. Paramount secured his involvement after production on “The Riders” wrapped.
Berger became an internationally recognized filmmaker after directing “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which earned four Academy Awards, including Best International Feature Film. He followed that success with “Conclave,” the Vatican-set political thriller that earned multiple Academy Award nominations.
“World War Z 2” will mark a major shift in scale for Berger as he moves from prestige dramas and thrillers into a large-scale horror action franchise.
Dennis Kelly Will Write the Sequel

Paramount has also brought in British screenwriter Dennis Kelly to write the screenplay. Kelly is best known for creating the acclaimed conspiracy thriller series “Utopia” and for writing “Matilda the Musical,“ which earned him a Tony Award.
His involvement could give the sequel a different tone from the first movie. Kelly’s work has often explored political conspiracies, social instability and institutional failure, themes that could complement the global-collapse premise of “World War Z.“
Pitt will produce the sequel alongside Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner through Plan B Entertainment. Berger is also expected to serve as an executive producer, giving him a significant role beyond directing.
Will World War Z 2 Return to the Book?
The original “World War Z” took considerable liberties with Max Brooks’ 2006 novel, “World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War.“ Rather than following the book’s oral-history structure, Marc Forster’s adaptation centered on Gerry Lane and his attempt to understand and contain a rapidly spreading zombie outbreak.
Brooks’ novel is structured as a collection of interviews and accounts from survivors around the world. Its focus extends beyond the outbreak itself, examining the political, economic and social consequences of a global zombie war.
The sequel’s creative team has not revealed whether it will move closer to Brooks’ approach. Kelly’s background in political and social storytelling, however, could create room for some of those themes to enter the new film.
What We Know About the Sequel
Paramount is keeping the story under wraps, and there are currently few confirmed details about the plot. Pitt is expected to return as Gerry Lane, but the studio has not announced the rest of the cast.
The sequel is expected to continue the franchise’s global scope, although its locations and storyline remain undisclosed. Paramount previously teased the revival at CinemaCon in Las Vegas as the project moved back into development.
With Pitt and Berger now attached, the film can move into the next stage of development. Paramount has yet to announce a production start date or theatrical release date.
For now, “World War Z 2″ represents the latest attempt to bring one of Hollywood’s most persistent sequel projects back to the big screen. After more than a decade of stalled plans, the franchise finally has its star and director in place.
