A day before the inauguration, President-elect Joe Biden along with wife Jill Biden, and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff held a memorial to honor those who lost their lives to COVID-19 in the United States wearing outfits with significant meanings.

The memorial service was held at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool where 400 lights were lit to honour the 400,000 lives to the virus. Apart from the lights at the memorial, Kamala Harris also demonstrated her tribute through her style. So did Jill Biden.

At the event which gestured goodwill, while Biden promoted healing with his speech, Kamala Harris’ outfit offered a gentle tribute to America’s struggles against the ongoing pandemic. Incoming First Lady Dr. Biden’s attire also reflected hope for change.

Dr. Biden went with a purple wrap coat and paneled dress from the Fall 2021 collection of Jonathan Cohen, who is one of a new generation of American designers who are promoting sustainability and authoritative design.

The color of her coat and mask, which was made from fabric scraps from Cohen’s studio, was also not a random decision. Purple is one of the Suffragette’s colors and it is also what you get when you mix red and blue––from the American flag.

To complete her look, the first lady opted for Jimmy Choo nude pumps.

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, on the other hand, wore a camel coat by Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, a Black designer who is entwining purpose and determination into his mission.

The coat’s designer and Pyer Moss founder, Jean-Raymond is not only known for his activism opposing racial injustice, but his efforts in the past year to support local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. After his sister was exposed to COVID-19 at work, the designer used his New York office to collect PPE for hospital workers. He also pledged $50,000 in grants for small minority and women-owned businesses.

Harris completed her look with a black pair of Manolo Blahnik boots.

With the vice president-elect fully aware of the power of fashion and the messages clothing can send, the decision to opt for deeply socially conscious labels mirrors her decision to wear pieces by Carolina Herrera for her victory speech.
