“Snowfall” Returns With “The Drop” as FX Unveils First Trailer

Snowfall Sequel

FX is taking the “Snowfall” universe into a new era with a sequel. The network has released the official trailer for “The Drop: A Snowfall Saga,” a new spinoff that picks up with familiar faces Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons as they attempt to build different lives in Los Angeles. This time, however, the story goes beyond the crack epidemic and into the rapidly changing world of 1990s West Coast hip-hop.

For Wanda, the music industry represents an opportunity to start over and build something that extends beyond the street economy she once knew. Leon, meanwhile, is committed to a different kind of redemption. As their paths begin to move in opposite directions, the trailer suggests that leaving the past behind may be much harder than either of them expects.

“The Drop” Takes Wanda Into the Music Business

Wanda, played by Gail Bean, is at the center of the new chapter. Having survived the world explored throughout “Snowfall,” she now sees the growing West Coast rap movement as something much bigger than entertainment.

Her ambitions lead her to an internship with Darryl “DG” Grant, played by Brandon Mychal Smith. Once involved in the drug trade himself, DG has reinvented his career as a record label owner. The opportunity puts Wanda inside an emerging music scene filled with artists, producers, and executives who are beginning to understand just how powerful West Coast hip-hop could become.

Among the new faces is Lamar Kinsey, played by Asante Blackk, a producer who becomes part of Wanda’s musical journey. West Coast rapper Buddy also joins the cast as Artillery, bringing an authentic connection to the culture that the series is exploring.

Rather than simply using the music industry as a backdrop, “The Drop” appears interested in the relationship between music, money, and power. The rise of rap created new opportunities for people who had previously been locked out of traditional entertainment spaces. It also created another arena where ambition could quickly collide with exploitation.

Leon Simmons, played by Isaiah John, is heading in another direction.

Instead of returning to the street economy, Leon is attempting to make amends through community work. His new life involves operating a free legal clinic, giving him a chance to help people facing some of the same systemic pressures that shaped his own past.

That mission puts him at odds with Wanda’s increasingly ambitious plans. While she sees the music industry as an avenue for growth, Leon appears more interested in breaking completely from the structures that once surrounded them.

Their different approaches could become one of the show’s central conflicts. Both characters want a better future, but they have very different ideas about what that future should look like.

The original “Snowfall” concluded after six seasons in 2023, with Franklin Saint’s story bringing the series’ exploration of Los Angeles and the crack epidemic to a devastating close. “The Drop” shifts the timeline and focus while retaining characters audiences already know.

The new setting also allows the franchise to explore another defining period in Los Angeles culture. The 1990s saw West Coast hip-hop become a major force in American music, creating a cultural movement that extended well beyond the recording studio.

That environment provides fertile ground for a “Snowfall” spinoff. Music, street politics, ambition, and money can occupy the same spaces, creating the kind of tension that made the original series so compelling.

Executive producers include Malcolm Spellman, Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, Trevor Engelson, and Paul Garnes.

“The Drop: A Snowfall Saga” premieres September 8, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on FX. New episodes will follow weekly on Tuesdays.
