Step By Step: The Best Order For Your Skincare Routine
G
one are the days when we randomly applied products on our skin hoping it does whatever it was made to do. Thanks to Soko Glam and the mainstream break of Korean skincare about a decade ago, we are more intentional about our routine and what we put on our skin. Add to that the impact of social media in the beauty industry and you see why a proper skincare regimen has become the order of the day. But with so many products — cleanser, moisturizer, toner — what is the correct application order? Skincare steps in order.
Although Soko Glam advocated for the 10-step skincare routine, dermatologists generally agree that five to seven steps are fine; the goal of which is to cleanse, balance, and hydrate your skin. With the right products best suited for your skin and the right skincare steps in order, you will discover that you get the most benefits from your products. So, what is the right application procedure?

Step 1: Cleanser
It is key to cleanse your face in the morning and at night. Cleansing in the morning removes any dead skin cells that have turned over on your face during sleep while washing your face at night removes makeup, sebum, and oil production from the day.
Step 2: Toner (optional)
Toning balances your skin and prepares it for additional serums, so it is important to use one that does not irritate the skin. Avoid toners that have harsh formulas and opt for alcohol-free options. Also, be mindful of how much you use to avoid drying out the skin.
Step 3: Eye cream
Since the skin around your eyes is thin, you want to be gentle. Apply with your ring finger and tap your eye cream on to avoid damaging the skin.
Step 4: Serum
Serums help with specific skin needs. Whether you choose vitamin C, retinol, or hyaluronic acid, serums give a concentrated dose of ingredients to your skin. Simply put, it is a more targeted treatment to help get rid of specific skincare issues. This can be anything from hyperpigmentation to aging and anything in between.
Step 5: Moisturizer
Besides hydrating your skin, applying a moisturizer locks in all the ingredients you applied beforehand. This helps to seal in all the goodness for soft, plump, and healthy skin.
Step 6: Sunscreen
In the morning, apply sunscreen to avoid UV damage which speeds up the aging process and can cause skin cancer. You should opt for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 in order to get the best form of protection.
