Since the Council of Fashion Designers of America unveiled the official lineup of designers and brands set to show at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021, fashion lovers were curious to see how their fave designers would showcase their collections amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

New York Fashion Week SS2021 kicked off with Jason Wu who showcased on Sunday evening at the open-air terrace of Spring Studios in NYC with a socially distanced crowd. For his “my home away from home” collection, Jason Wu teamed up with Lowe using materials and products sourced from the home improvement retailer.

Likely in an attempt to cater to his customer’s needs for ‘home fits’ as opposed to outfits––due to limited outings during the pandemic period, for the first time, Jason Wu showcased kaftans, nap dresses, and playful separates.

Still, on the opening night, Harlem’s Fashion Row held its 13th annual Style Awards and Fashion Show, but this year, due to the restrictions on gatherings, the show held virtually and streamed on the CFDA’s digital platform Runway360. The platform which is designed to support and amplify Black creatives in fashion also debuted new collections from three brands namely Richfresh, Kimberly Goldson, and Kristian Loren.

Also honored was Kerby Jean-Raymond as its Designer of the Year for his work at Pyer Moss. In the course of the event, a moving tribute was also paid to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Jacob Blake, as well as others who have lost their lives to racial injustice.

For NYFW Spring/Summer 2021 season, only a few designers are hosting in-person shows and presentations, and they are strictly adhering to the guidelines put in place by the New York State governor, Andrew Cuomo. Other designers are opting for other forms of presentation such as having their shows pre-recorded, pre-shot, or even live virtual presentations.
