A fashion and pop culture writer who watches a lot…
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the theme for its 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala, turning its attention to everyday clothing and the creative possibilities of ordinary materials. Titled “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” the new Met Gala 2027 theme will explore how designers transform familiar wardrobe staples, including jeans, T-shirts, trench coats, and puffer jackets, into remarkable fashion statements.
Organized by Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, the exhibition will also examine how unconventional materials such as paper, aluminum, and plastic can be transformed into wearable works of art. Rather than concentrating solely on elaborate couture, the show will investigate the relationship between fashion and everyday life, challenging visitors to reconsider the clothing and objects they might otherwise overlook.
The Met Gala 2027 Theme Will Explore the Extraordinary in the Ordinary

The exhibition will approach its subject through two central ideas. The first will examine how designers reinterpret recognizable garments through unexpected structures, construction techniques, and materials. The second will investigate the creative potential of commonplace and disposable materials, highlighting how designers turn overlooked objects into experimental fashion.
Bolton developed the concept following the Costume Institute’s 2026 exhibition, “Costume Art,” which explored the dressed body as a central part of aesthetic experience. His interest in how people experience clothing through touch, movement, habit, and everyday routines eventually informed the direction of the 2027 exhibition.
“I wanted an exhibition that wasn’t just a masterwork show or something that we could do a little bit more easily,” Bolton explained. He added that the project needed to be as challenging, provocative, and visually compelling as the previously planned John Galliano exhibition.
The new Met Gala 2027 theme also reflects a wider interest in individuality and recognizable clothing across contemporary fashion. According to Bolton, understated gestures can carry more meaning than extravagant displays, making everyday garments an interesting starting point for examining fashion’s cultural significance.
Which Designers and Collections Will Feature?
Several influential designers will feature in the exhibition, including Martin Margiela, Virgil Abloh, Jonathan Anderson, Pierpaolo Piccioli, and Jun Takahashi.
Takahashi’s fall 2024 Undercover collection will greet visitors at the exhibition’s entrance. Inspired by Wim Wenders’s film “Perfect Days,” the collection explored the beauty of everyday routines through familiar garments transformed using collage and layering techniques.
Another section, titled “Familiar Forms,” will examine how designers have reimagined recognizable wardrobe staples. Featured creations will include Virgil Abloh’s Off-White T-shirts, Gianfranco Ferré’s white shirts, Jonathan Anderson’s unconventional trench coats for Loewe, and Pierpaolo Piccioli’s puffer gowns for Moncler.
The exhibition will also revisit Matthieu Blazy’s fall 2022 Bottega Veneta collection, particularly its trompe l’oeil leather jeans, which recreated the appearance of conventional denim using leather.
Meanwhile, the “Common Matter” section will focus on the transformation of discarded objects and inexpensive materials into wearable creations. Martin Margiela will feature prominently, with experimental designs demonstrating the craftsmanship involved in working with unconventional materials. The exhibition will also include creations such as a splintered china ensemble and Ellen Hodakova Larsson’s sculptural spoon dress.
The show will conclude with the work of Kunihiko Morinaga of Anrealage, whose experimental proportions and unexpected geometries transform familiar garments into conceptual fashion pieces.
The Exhibition Follows the Cancellation of John Galliano’s Show

The announcement follows the Metropolitan Museum’s decision to abandon its original plans for a 2027 exhibition dedicated to John Galliano. The proposed retrospective became a cultural flashpoint after renewed attention to the designer’s history of antisemitic remarks prompted criticism from donors and museum supporters. Galliano withdrew from the project in August 2026.
Bolton said the new exhibition was not a previously developed backup plan. Instead, he worked with Met director and chief executive Max Hollein to develop a different concept that could introduce contemporary conversations about fashion.
Questions surrounding consumption, resourcefulness, craftsmanship, and the value of materials will form an important part of the exhibition. Bolton is particularly interested in how designers give discarded objects new life and challenge conventional ideas about what makes a garment valuable.
When Is the Met Gala 2027?
The 2027 Met Gala will take place on May 3, 2027, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The accompanying exhibition will open to the public on May 9 and remain on view through January 9, 2028.
London-based scenographic design studio 1009 will conceptualize the exhibition, with an installation designed to encourage interaction between visitors and the displayed creations. Instagram will serve as the presenting sponsor, with major funding from Moncler and additional support from Condé Nast. Educational programming will receive support from Jordan Roth.
The celebrity co-hosts and official dress code have yet to be announced. However, Bolton has suggested that he would like visitors to attend the exhibition wearing their favorite everyday pieces, including jeans, T-shirts, and hoodies.
With the new Met Gala 2027 theme, the Costume Institute is placing familiar clothing and unconventional materials at the center of fashion’s biggest annual celebration. The exhibition will ultimately explore how creativity, craftsmanship, and a different perspective can transform the ordinary into something extraordinary.
