It’s no longer news that the coronavirus pandemic has altered the fashion industry in more ways than one. From fashion weeks getting totally cancelled to just some shows getting cancelled, to others having their dates moved around—one constant has been virtual fashion shows becoming the norm. Fashion designers and enthusiasts alike have all had to adapt to this new normal.
This year, the CFDA chairman Tom Ford announced the official renaming of New York Fashion Week as the “American Collections Calendar.”
The New York Fashion Week FW21 just wrapped up and the designers who showcased proved once again that dreams can be sold on the runway. For this season, almost all shows and presentations took place behind closed doors while fashion faithfuls watched the collections digitally, via fashion films and/or shoot with a few others hosting physical fashion shows with limited audiences.
Irrespective of the times we are faced with, there was still plenty of excitement around the NYFW FW21 shows and designers mesmerized our screens with breathtaking creations in 2021.
For Proenza Schouler, the collection which featured Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter Ella Emhoff, consisted of minimalistic earthy tone looks that were structural yet had an aesthetic about them that screamed balance. This was Ella’s runway debut as a newly signed IMG model.
The Ghanaian fashion house, Studio 189, founded in 2013 by Abrima Erwiah and Rosario Dawson, took the 2021 NYFW FW21 to Ghana as they celebrated their heritage. The colorful collection showed off African-inspired attires like the traditional Ghanaian fabric popularly known as Kente and the popular West African tie and dye fabric known in Nigeria as Adire.
