1. Idris Elba and Cynthia Erivo recognized in the King’s New Year Honors List

Idris Elba and Cynthia Erivo are beginning the year with prestigious national recognition after being named in King Charles III’s 2026 New Year Honors List, which celebrates professional excellence and public service across the United Kingdom. Elba was awarded a knighthood for his services to young people, an honor that acknowledges both his acclaimed acting career and his sustained advocacy against youth violence. Best known for roles in The Wire, Luther, and the Thor franchise, Elba has been vocal about the rise in knife crime in the U.K. and has worked closely with policymakers, including King Charles and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to explore solutions through public dialogue and documentary work.

Cynthia Erivo was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to music and drama, recognizing a career that has reshaped contemporary theater and film. Since her breakout performance in The Color Purple on Broadway, Erivo has earned Tony and Grammy awards and expanded her global profile with acclaimed screen roles, including her recent work in the Wicked films. The New Year Honors List highlights a growing appreciation for artists whose influence extends beyond culture into community impact, a sentiment echoed by Starmer, who praised recipients for strengthening communities and changing lives through their dedication and service.

2. Burna Boy’s “I Told Them” becomes the highest-grossing tour by an African artist in history

Burna Boy has set a new global benchmark after his I Told Them tour became the highest-grossing tour by an African artist in history. According to tour monitoring data, the Nigerian superstar grossed $30.5 million from 302,801 tickets sold across 22 shows in Europe and North America, underscoring the growing international reach of Afrobeats. The platform confirmed the milestone in a statement, noting that I Told Them now stands as the most commercially successful tour ever by an African and Afrobeats artist.

The record-breaking run also included the highest-grossing single concert by an African artist, after Burna Boy earned $6.147 million from 58,973 tickets sold at London Stadium on June 29, 2024. Overall, the tour generated $15.19 million from 152,378 tickets across 16 North American shows, while Europe accounted for $15.27 million from 150,423 tickets sold in six dates. While Taylor Swift’s Eras tour remains the highest-grossing music tour of all time at $2 billion, Burna Boy’s achievement marks a historic moment for African music on the world stage.

3. Denmark becomes the first country to stop delivering letters

Denmark has become the first country in the world to stop delivering letters, marking the end of a 400-year tradition as its state-run postal service, PostNord, delivers its final piece of mail. The decision reflects the country’s rapid shift to digital communication, with letter volumes falling by more than 90% since 2000. Once a symbol of national connection, the former Central Post Building in Copenhagen, which opened in 1912 during the height of Denmark’s postal era, now stands as a luxury hotel, underscoring how dramatically communication habits have changed in the digital age.

PostNord has already removed its 1,500 red mailboxes across the country, selling many to the public as collectibles, while letter delivery will now be handled by private courier DAO through shop drop-offs. Parcel deliveries will continue, driven by e-commerce growth, and most official communication in Denmark already takes place through online government portals. While officials say nearly all Danes are fully digital, advocacy groups warn the move could disadvantage older people and others who rely on physical mail, highlighting ongoing concerns about digital exclusion even in one of the world’s most connected nations.

4. George and Amal Clooney granted French citizenship

George Clooney and his family have been granted French citizenship, according to official government records released over the weekend. A notice in France’s official gazette listing new naturalizations includes the Oscar-winning actor, his wife Amal Clooney, and their twin children, Alexander and Ella. Clooney, who also holds U.S. citizenship, and Amal, a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer, have long ties to France and count a farm in the country as their primary residence, alongside homes in England and the United States.

The move reflects Clooney’s longstanding desire to raise his children away from the pressures of Hollywood fame. He has repeatedly spoken about seeking a more normal upbringing for his family, praising France for its cultural indifference to celebrity and its strong privacy protections. French law places strict limits on photographing individuals in private settings and restricts the publication of images of public figures outside official appearances, measures that Clooney has cited as key to ensuring safety and privacy for his children, concerns he has previously highlighted in public appeals to the media.

5. Patriots star Stefon Diggs is facing felony charges

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing felony charges following an alleged incident earlier this month in Massachusetts. According to court documents released Tuesday from Dedham District Court, the 32-year-old has been charged with felony strangulation or suffocation, along with misdemeanor assault and battery, stemming from a December 2 incident in Dedham. During a remote court appearance, Diggs’s attorney, Michael DiStefano, requested that the police report be impounded, citing concerns about widespread publicity potentially affecting the legal process. He also disclosed that Diggs has made a financial offer in an effort to resolve the dispute with the alleged victim. The judge has taken the request under advisement and is also considering a motion to delay Diggs’ arraignment, currently scheduled for January 23.

The New England Patriots acknowledged the charges in a statement Tuesday, saying Diggs has “categorically” denied the allegations and affirming the team’s support while it cooperates with authorities and the NFL. The legal development comes at a pivotal moment for the Patriots, who recently clinched the AFC East title and are competing for a first-round playoff bye. Diggs has been a key contributor this season, recording 82 receptions for 970 yards and four touchdowns, while also making headlines off the field after welcoming a baby boy with his girlfriend, rapper Cardi B, in November.
