A’ja Wilson has been named TIME’s 2025 Athlete of the Year, an honor that underscores a season of dominance that stretched far beyond the basketball court. The Las Vegas Aces superstar delivered one of the most complete campaigns in professional sports history, becoming the first player across the WNBA or NBA to win a league championship, Finals MVP, regular-season MVP (her fourth), and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. Wilson also reached the 5,000-point milestone faster than any player before her, drawing comparisons to legends such as Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and LeBron James, solidifying her place among the greatest athletes of any era.
TIME’s selection for the 2025 Athlete of the Year recognizes not only Wilson’s unprecedented statistical excellence, but also her profound cultural impact at a pivotal moment for the WNBA. As the league emerged from a 2024 season marked by heightened scrutiny and racialized narratives around its growing audience, Wilson’s brilliance in 2025 served as an undeniable affirmation of its world-class talent. Off the court, she continued to shape the sport’s future as a leader in collective-bargaining negotiations, a best-selling author of Dear Black Girls, and a powerful symbol of representation, highlighted by the launch of her Nike A’One signature shoe. More than an individual accolade, Wilson’s Athlete of the Year honor marks a defining moment for women’s sports and for Black female athletes globally.

Burna Boy has set a new benchmark for Nigerian artists on American television, becoming the most-featured Nigerian act in the history of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” The Grammy Award–winning superstar reached the milestone with his latest appearance in 2025, extending his record-breaking run on the NBC late-night show to four performances. His appearances, spread across six years, trace both the rise of Afrobeats in the United States and Burna Boy’s steady ascent as one of its leading global ambassadors.
Burna Boy’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” journey began in 2019, when he first introduced a mainstream U.S. audience to the sounds of Afrobeats. Subsequent performances in 2020 and 2022 followed as his international profile surged, leading to his record-setting fourth appearance in 2025. The consistency of these invitations highlights his enduring appeal and cultural relevance, with each performance serving as a major moment for African music on a global stage. The new record further cements Burna Boy’s status as one of Africa’s most influential and commercially successful artists.

About 100 schoolchildren abducted from a Catholic school in central Nigeria last month have been released, authorities confirmed on Monday. The children arrived in the Niger state capital, Minna, in a convoy of minibuses escorted by military vehicles, where they were received by Governor Umar Bago. Details surrounding their release remain unclear, including whether it was achieved through negotiations or a security operation, and officials have not said if any ransoms were paid. The students were among more than 250 pupils and 12 staff kidnapped from St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri in November, in one of the latest mass abductions to hit the country.
Officials said the freed children will be transported back to the school, located more than 300 kilometres from Minna, on Tuesday to reunite with their families. Neighbouring Nasarawa state governor Abdullahi Sule credited the federal government with playing a key role in the operation, though he said details could not be disclosed for security reasons. Despite the release, about 153 students and 12 staff members are still being held by the gunmen. Nigeria has faced a surge in kidnappings targeting schools and places of worship in recent weeks. Authorities blame criminal gangs and, in some cases, jihadist groups, even as the government insists victims of all faiths are affected by the ongoing security crisis.

A multi-episode docuseries chronicling the life and legacy of Nipsey Hussle is set to arrive in 2026, offering fans an intimate look at the late rapper’s journey and enduring impact. According to Variety, the project, tentatively titled Hussle, is nearing completion and is currently seeking a streaming home. Directed by One9, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Nas: Time Is Illmatic and Allen Iverson, The Series, will span between five and seven episodes and feature rare archival footage, never-before-heard music, and narration from Nipsey Hussle himself alongside his brother, Blacc Sam. The docuseries is backed by Marathon Films and LeBron James’ SpringHill Company.
More than six years after Hussle’s death in 2019, the series aims to capture the full arc of his life, from his upbringing in South Los Angeles to his emergence as a global hip-hop figure and community leader. One9 said the project has been years in the making, emphasizing the care taken to tell the story “the right way,” aided by extensive home videos and personal recordings that document Hussle’s evolution over time. The docuseries will also feature insight from family, friends, and prominent artists, including JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar, reinforcing the continued resonance of a figure whose influence extends well beyond music.
5. Max Dowman dropped from Arsenal’s Champions League squad until February
🚨⚠️ Max Dowman suffers injury and will be out for ‘weeks’, says Arteta.

Arsenal have dropped teenage sensation Max Dowman from their Champions League squad, ruling him out of further involvement in the competition until February 2026. The club confirmed that the 15-year-old has been replaced on their UEFA A list by striker Gabriel Jesus, who has returned to fitness after a lengthy layoff with a knee injury. As a result, Dowman will not be eligible to feature in any UEFA competition for the next 60 days. He will instead be added to the club’s UEFA B list when registrations reopen in January.
The decision brings a pause to a historic European breakthrough for Dowman, who became the youngest player ever to feature in the Champions League earlier this season at 15 years and 308 days. Despite impressing manager Mikel Arteta during his record-setting cameo against Slavia Prague, the midfielder has recently picked up an ankle injury while playing for Arsenal’s under-21s. His omission clears the way for Jesus to return to European action, with the Brazilian now available for Wednesday’s group-stage clash with Club Brugge as Arsenal look to continue their perfect record in the competition.
