Dior has announced the death of its longtime public relations director, Mathilde Favier, who died at 57 in a car accident in France on Monday, August 17. The fashion house confirmed her death on Tuesday, describing it as an “accidental death.” French reports say Favier was traveling with her partner, film producer Nicolas Altmayer, 61, when their vehicle collided with a truck.

The sudden loss has sent shock through the fashion industry, where Favier was a familiar and highly regarded figure. She spent more than a decade at Dior, working closely with the luxury house’s executives, designers, celebrity ambassadors, and clients while helping shape its public image around the world.

Mathilde Favier Dies in France Crash

According to French newspaper Le Monde, Favier and Altmayer were traveling in a vehicle that collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction while they were overtaking another vehicle.

The crash occurred on Monday, August 17, in France. Niort deputy prosecutor Nicolas Leclainche provided details of the accident to Le Monde. According to Variety, authorities have opened an investigation for involuntary manslaughter as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Dior confirmed Favier’s passing in a statement posted to Instagram on Tuesday.

“Dior is deeply saddened to announce the accidental death of Mathilde Favier,” the fashion house said. “In her role as Director of Public Relations, Mathilde Favier made an incredible contribution to the reputation of Christian Dior Couture through her commitment and elegance.”

The statement added that Favier was “an exceptional woman” whose joy, talent, and loyalty were exemplary.

Delphine Arnault, chairperson and CEO of Christian Dior Couture, also paid tribute to Favier following the accident.

“Mathilde loved life with a passion,” Arnault said. She described Favier as an “incredible professional” and a loyal friend, praising her optimism and courage before extending her condolences to Favier’s children, mother, sisters, family, friends, and Dior team.

Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH, Dior’s parent company, remembered Favier for the passion, energy, and talent she devoted to the fashion house throughout her career.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic and sudden passing of Mathilde Favier,” he said, adding that she had spent many years putting her talents at the service of Dior.

Dior creative director Jonathan Anderson also shared an emotional tribute. Anderson said he was “heartbroken” by Favier’s passing and credited her with bringing warmth, energy, and positivity to those around her.

“Mathilde was the very embodiment of elegance and in many ways, the spirit of Couture itself,” Anderson said.

He later shared a black-and-white photograph of Favier on Instagram, describing her as one of the happiest, kindest, and most generous people he had known.

Mathilde Favier’s Career at Dior

Favier joined Dior in 2011 after previously working in public relations at Prada. She began her career in the fashion industry during the 1980s, working at magazines including Glamour and Femina before moving into luxury fashion communications.

During her years at Dior, Favier became one of the house’s most recognizable public-facing executives. She worked closely with major Dior ambassadors and clients, including Natalie Portman, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lawrence.

She was also a regular presence at Dior’s runway shows during Paris Fashion Week. Her cropped hairstyle and wide smile made her instantly recognizable as she welcomed celebrities and helped guide guests to their seats.

Beyond her role at Dior, Favier developed a reputation as a fashion figure in her own right. She was frequently photographed in Dior looks and became known for her distinctive approach to French style.

In 2024, she published “Living Beautifully in Paris,” a coffee-table book centered on her approach to Parisian living and entertaining.

Favier was also the mother of two children, Héloïse and Carlo. Following Mathilde Favier’s death, Carlo shared an emotional tribute to his mother on Instagram, posting several photographs of them together.

“My heart aches and my brain is foggy,” he wrote, describing the difficulty of processing her sudden passing.
