Marvel Studios has officially found its Storm. Maya Boyd has been cast as Ororo Munroe in the studio’s upcoming “X-Men” movie reboot, marking the 23-year-old Broadway actor’s feature-film debut and making her one of the most intriguing new additions to the MCU. The announcement came as Marvel unveiled the first major wave of its “X-Men” cast, which also includes Sadie Sink, Kit Connor, Christopher Abbott, Samara Weaving, Inde Navarrette and Adam Driver.
For Boyd, the casting represents a dramatic jump from the Broadway stage to one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. She has built her career in musical theater and recently took on a major role in August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.” Now, she is preparing to play one of Marvel’s most recognizable mutants in a movie that is expected to introduce the “X-Men” properly into the MCU.

Marvel announced Boyd’s casting during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier introduced the first group of actors joining the new “X-Men” film.
Boyd will play Storm, the powerful mutant also known as Ororo Munroe. In the comics, Storm is an African-born mutant with the ability to manipulate weather and one of the most important leaders in X-Men history.
The role has already carried significant movie history. Halle Berry portrayed Storm in the original “X-Men” films, while Alexandra Shipp played a younger version of the character in “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Dark Phoenix.” Maya Boyd now becomes the third actor to bring the character to the big screen in a major “X-Men” film series.
Her casting is particularly notable because it is also her first movie role. Unlike several of her new MCU co-stars, Boyd does not arrive with an extensive filmography. Her professional background is firmly rooted in theater.
From Broadway to Marvel

Before joining the “X-Men” cast, Boyd was already making a name for herself on Broadway.
She made her Broadway debut in “Merrily We Roll Along” while finishing her senior year at the University of Michigan. Boyd performed as an onstage swing and understudied Gussie, an experience she later described as one of the hardest things she had ever done.
In an April 2026 interview with Theatrely, Boyd explained that taking on professional work while still completing school allowed her to approach the experience with a student mindset. She credited the production with giving her an early example of what it meant to conduct herself as an artist and professional.
That Broadway debut was followed by a starring role in “& Juliet,” where Boyd took on the title character. She later moved into straight theater with “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” playing Molly Cunningham in the Broadway revival directed by Debbie Allen.
That progression has given Boyd experience across singing, dancing and dramatic acting, all skills that could prove useful as she takes on a physically demanding superhero role.
Debbie Allen Played a Role in Maya Boyd’s Journey
There is also an unexpected connection between Boyd’s theater career and her latest role.
Boyd first encountered Debbie Allen when she was 13, attending a summer intensive at Allen’s dance academy in Los Angeles. At the time, Boyd considered herself primarily a dancer and had not seriously imagined pursuing musical theater or acting professionally.
Allen eventually encouraged her to sing, despite Boyd’s nerves about performing vocally in front of anyone outside her family. More than a decade later, Boyd found herself working with Allen professionally on “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.”
Looking back, Boyd described the early encounter as a seed that she never realized would eventually grow into a career in musical theater.
Now, that career has taken her somewhere she could hardly have imagined at 13: the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Boyd is part of a surprisingly stacked first wave of X-Men cast announcements.
Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, following her introduction as the character in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” “Heartstopper” star Kit Connor has been cast as Scott Summers/Cyclops, while Christopher Abbott will portray Professor Charles Xavier.
Samara Weaving is joining the film as Emma Frost, and Inde Navarrette will play Rogue. Adam Driver was also revealed as part of the cast through a video appearance during the D23 presentation. He will portray Nathaniel Milbury, a mysterious character associated with the sinister Mr. Sinister.
Marvel has stressed that this is only the beginning, with more X-Men cast announcements expected as the reboot continues to take shape.
Director Jake Schreier, who previously helmed “Thunderbolts*,” will direct the film, which is scheduled to arrive exclusively in theaters on May 5, 2028.
A New Era for Storm Begins
Storm is one of the most important characters in the “X-Men” mythology, so Marvel’s choice of Boyd immediately gives the newcomer a major responsibility. The character’s African heritage, regal presence, immense powers and history as an “X-Men” leader have made her a fan favorite for decades.
For Maya Boyd, however, the challenge comes at the beginning of what could become a much bigger screen career.
She has already proven herself on Broadway. Now, with her first movie role taking her directly into the MCU, Boyd is stepping onto a considerably larger stage.
And while fans still have to wait until 2028 to see her officially become Storm, Marvel has already made one thing clear: the newest member of the “X-Men” cast is no longer a name theater audiences will have to themselves.
