Why Are More Married Black Women Becoming Breadwinners + Ways To Cope With Change

n today’s society, women are increasingly becoming the primary breadwinners in their families. This is especially true for Black women who have a long history of being the backbone of their communities and families. Despite the progress we’ve made financially and otherwise, there are still lots of challenges women encounter when fulfilling this role. A married Black woman being the breadwinner is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it has been normalized in many Black households for decades. This is partly due to historical and ongoing economic inequalities. These glaring economic, racial, and political biases have made it difficult for Black men to attain the same level of economic success as their White counterparts. As a result, many Black women have had to take on the role of primary breadwinners in their families to provide for their loved ones.

Some individuals argue that another factor that might have led to the normalization of this is feminism. While feminism has made significant progress in creating greater opportunities and equality for women in the workplace, there is still a long way to go when it comes to balancing gender roles within the home. It is also important to note that feminism advocates for equality in all aspects of life, including marriage. However, the clamor for equality at home means that the woman should become an equal provider. This perhaps unconsciously tilted men to taking the back seat, and women becoming the breadwinners. Some argue that feminism emasculates the man, and they often relinquish their role.

The goal should be to create a partnership where both partners feel valued and respected, and where the burdens of life are shared equally, regardless of gender. Feminism should not be about shifting the balance of power from one gender to the other, but rather about creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and succeed based on their abilities and merits.

How to solve the issue of married black women as breadwinners…

Equality

A shift in cultural attitudes and beliefs about gender roles and responsibilities in relationships is required to solve this problem of married black women being breadwinners. This shift involves recognizing that both partners in a relationship can contribute equally to household income and domestic responsibilities, regardless of gender.

One important step towards achieving equality is to promote open and honest communication about financial matters within the relationship. This includes discussing expectations around earning, spending, and saving, and creating a joint financial plan that reflects the priorities and goals of both partners.

Canceling traditional gender roles

This involves dismantling the societal expectations and assumptions placed on individuals based on their gender. This can be done by:

  • Education and awareness: These are important steps toward canceling traditional gender roles. It is essential to teach people about gender equality, its significance, and the negative impacts of gender stereotypes.
  • Encourage equal parenting: Fostering equal parenting is another way to cancel traditional gender roles. Men should take on equal responsibilities at home, such as childcare, housework, and supporting their partner’s career goals.
  • Recognizing the woman’s freedom: A married black woman must be allowed the freedom to pursue her career goals and aspirations while still maintaining a healthy balance with her family. This can be achieved by establishing clear communication and expectations within the marriage. Both partners need to be on the same page and support each other’s goals.

The man needs to recognize that his wife’s success is also his success. And for him to actively contribute to the household and support his wife’s career. This can mean taking on more household duties or even adjusting work schedules to better accommodate family responsibilities.

At the same time, the woman should prioritize her family and maintain a healthy work-life balance. This can mean setting clear boundaries and finding ways to manage stress and workload, such as delegating tasks or seeking support from family and friends.

If you’re a married woman and also the breadwinner, there are a few things you can do to cope with the situation.

  • Communicate: Firstly, honestly communicate with your partner about the situation. Discuss how you both can contribute to the family’s financial well-being and work together to create a plan that ensures that the division of labor is fair and equal.
  • Set boundaries: Secondly, it’s essential to establish boundaries and prioritize self-care. Being the breadwinner can be overwhelming and stressful. Ensure you take care of yourself physically and emotionally. Find time for activities that help you relax and recharge.
  • Seek support: Thirdly, don’t be afraid to seek support from friends and family. Surround yourself with people who can offer encouragement and practical support when needed.
  • See things differently: Understand that this isn’t a plague. Of course, it could be burdensome when a person is carrying all the weight, but change your perception to positivity. It will come a long way.
  • Be proud of who you are: Finally, remember that being the breadwinner does not diminish your value as a wife and mother. Celebrate your accomplishments and contributions to your family’s financial well-being, and never relegate your dreams to the background.
