Apple has unveiled its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, introducing a multi-touch display to its long-standing lineup of professional laptops. Officially named the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, the new model combines a tandem OLED panel, M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, and the Dynamic Island interface, marking a significant change in how users interact with macOS.

Available in 14-inch and 16-inch configurations, the new MacBook Pro brings touch controls to a product line traditionally built around the keyboard and trackpad. Pre-orders opened October 28 through Apple’s online store and Apple Store app, with retail availability scheduled for November 6. Pricing starts at $2,899, with higher-end configurations costing more depending on the processor, memory, and storage selected.

Apple Brings Touch Controls to the MacBook Pro

The touchscreen marks a notable change for Apple’s Mac lineup, which has historically kept touch interaction on the iPhone and iPad. The company previously experimented with touch-oriented controls through the Touch Bar, introduced on the MacBook Pro in 2016 and discontinued with the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch models in 2021.

The new display integrates a multi-touch sensor directly into the tandem OLED panel, which Apple says eliminates latency. The implementation supports gesture navigation, digital illustration, and music production, giving users more direct control over compatible applications. Apple has also re-engineered the laptop’s hinge to improve screen stability during tapping and drawing.

The display reaches a peak brightness of 2,000 nits for HDR and SDR content and offers a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. ProMotion adaptive refresh rates reach 120Hz, while support for the P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts caters to professionals working in photography, video production, and other color-sensitive fields. Its tandem OLED construction uses two emissive layers to deliver higher brightness.

Dynamic Island Makes Its Mac Debut

Apple is also bringing Dynamic Island to macOS for the first time. Originally introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, the interactive interface now serves as a central hub for Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI on the touchscreen MacBook Pro.

Live Activities can display ongoing tasks, including timers and delivery updates, without requiring users to leave their current application. Spotlight and Siri AI also occupy the interface, consolidating frequently used tools within a single interactive area.

The addition complements the new touch functionality by giving users more ways to access information and controls without interrupting their workflow. For illustrators and music producers, the combination of direct screen interaction and integrated software controls could reduce reliance on external accessories. However, the experience will also depend on how quickly developers adapt their Mac applications to touchscreen input.

M5 Pro and M5 Max Power the New MacBook Pro

The 14-inch and 16-inch models feature Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, with configurations offering up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage. The unified memory architecture allows the CPU and GPU to access a shared pool of memory, supporting demanding creative applications and large workloads.

Each GPU core also includes a dedicated Neural Accelerator designed to accelerate on-device artificial intelligence tasks. A redesigned thermal architecture manages heat during intensive workloads, while the aluminum enclosure maintains a relatively portable design. Apple lists the 14-inch model at approximately 3 pounds and the 16-inch version at around 4 pounds.

Battery life reaches up to 24 hours, according to Apple. Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports for high-speed data transfers and external displays, alongside Wi-Fi 7 support. A six-speaker sound system rounds out the hardware, with Apple claiming 50 percent deeper bass.

Together, the specifications position the new MacBook Pro toward professionals handling demanding video-editing projects, music production, and locally processed AI workloads. The touchscreen adds another interaction method without replacing the traditional keyboard-and-trackpad setup.

MacBook Pro Price and Release Date

Pre-orders for Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro opened October 28 through the company’s online store and Apple Store app. The laptops are scheduled to arrive in stores on November 6, with starting prices of $2,899.

The final price will depend on the selected screen size, processor, memory, and storage configuration. Buyers can customize their preferred setup through Apple’s website before placing an order.

The touchscreen is likely to be most immediately useful for illustrators, music producers, and professionals who regularly move between a Mac and an iPad. Users who primarily rely on keyboard shortcuts and trackpad gestures may prefer to wait for reviews and broader third-party application support before upgrading.

With its tandem OLED display, M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, and the arrival of Dynamic Island on macOS, the new MacBook Pro represents a substantial change to Apple’s professional laptop experience. Its long-term appeal will depend on whether touch becomes an integral part of everyday Mac workflows or remains an additional option for specific creative tasks.
