Noah Wyle has been named People’s 2026 Sexiest Man Alive, adding another milestone to a career that has spanned more than three decades in television. The “The Pitt” star received the honor on Tuesday, October 27, marking his first time claiming the magazine’s annual title after rising to prominence as Dr. John Carter on NBC’s “ER” in 1994.

The announcement comes as Wyle enjoys renewed recognition for his performance as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in HBO’s hit medical drama “The Pitt.” The actor, 55, admitted that he initially thought the news was a prank, expressing surprise at receiving an honor traditionally associated with Hollywood’s biggest heartthrobs. His selection follows a successful awards season that included a Golden Globe and consecutive Emmy wins for his work on the series.

Speaking to People about the recognition, Wyle said he never imagined he would receive the magazine’s coveted distinction.

“I thought that sounded like a prank — just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me,” the actor said.

Wyle responded to the news with humor, joking that the title might usher in a more glamorous chapter of his life. “I hope this changes everything. I hope it’s just wine and roses, milk and honey from here on out,” he said, before adding that he expected plenty of teasing from friends and family.

Despite his decades in the entertainment industry, Wyle has acknowledged that he remains uncomfortable with certain aspects of fame. In his interview, he explained that he enjoys inhabiting characters but can feel self-conscious when speaking as himself without a script.

The reaction offers a contrast to the attention surrounding his latest television role, which has made him a prominent subject of online conversations and renewed fan interest.

Wyle first gained widespread recognition playing medical student and doctor John Carter on “ER,” which premiered in 1994. The NBC drama became one of television’s most successful medical series, featuring an ensemble cast that included George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Sherry Stringfield and Julianna Margulies.

During his time on the show, Wyle received three Golden Globe nominations and five Emmy nominations. Although he did not win either award for his performance in “ER,”  his portrayal of Carter helped establish him as a television star.

Clooney recently offered a lighthearted endorsement of his former co-star. Speaking at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards in January 2026, Clooney joked about the idea of a “Sexiest Man Still Alive” issue and said he would nominate Wyle. “When I grow up, I want to be Noah Wyle,” he added.

Wyle’s latest recognition comes 16 years after “ER” concluded in 2009. He returned to the medical drama genre with “The Pitt,” which premiered in 2025 and follows medical professionals navigating the pressures of an emergency department in Pittsburgh.

Award Wins Fuel Wyle’s Career Resurgence

Wyle’s performance as Dr. Robby has earned widespread acclaim, with the actor winning the Golden Globe for best performance by a male actor in a television series, drama, in 2026. He also won consecutive Emmy Awards for outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 2025 and 2026.

The series has attracted attention for its intense depiction of emergency medicine and the emotional strain experienced by healthcare workers. Wyle’s portrayal of Robby combines dry humor with the exhaustion and responsibility of leading a hospital team through demanding shifts.

Season three of “The Pitt” is scheduled to premiere in January 2027. Wyle is set to reprise his role, with the upcoming season depicting events on November 12, 2026, rather than following the show’s previous approach of aligning its timeline with the period in which episodes air.

The show’s continued success has helped introduce Wyle to a new generation of viewers while reinforcing his standing among television’s leading dramatic actors.

Wyle also discussed his family’s reaction to the announcement in his People interview. He shares two children, Owen and Auden, with his former wife, Tracy Warbin, and has a daughter, Frances, with his wife, Sara Wells.

According to the actor, Sara was pleased with the honor, believing that his qualities as a husband and father reflected positively on him. His children, however, responded with a mixture of disbelief and humor.

Wyle said his son anticipated that the increased attention could make life more difficult, while his older daughter appeared ready to tease him about the title for years to come.

The actor has also described his preference for a relatively grounded home life, including making breakfast, washing dishes, exercising and spending time with his family. These routines provide a contrast to the demanding hospital shifts that have defined many of his best-known performances.

Noah Wyle Succeeds Jonathan Bailey

The Sexiest Man Alive franchise, launched in 1985, is marking its 41st year. Wyle succeeds “Wicked” star Jonathan Bailey, who received the 2025 title and became the first openly gay man to be named the magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive.

Previous recipients include Patrick Dempsey, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Michael B. Jordan, John Legend and Idris Elba.

With Noah Wyle named People’s 2026 Sexiest Man Alive, the magazine recognizes an actor whose renewed popularity has accompanied one of the most successful periods of his career. As “The Pitt” prepares to return for its third season, Wyle’s latest achievement adds another distinction to a television career that continues to attract critical acclaim and audience attention.
