1. Stop calling me ‘Your excellency,’ Sanwo-Olu tells Lagosians
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has asked residents to stop using the title, ‘Your Excellency’ where he is concerned. In a statement on Wednesday, the governor said he preferred to be addressed as ‘Mr Governor’ to deepen the citizen-government relations.
Sanwo-Olu said he had concluded that for the narrative of governance to change, the government must remove the “seeming symbol of executive arrogance that commands popular obeisance and undermines the democratic role of citizens as the masters of those they have elected and appointed to serve.”
2. Three killed in Baghdad protests as military bans live ammunition
At least three people were killed in anti-government protests in Baghdad on Wednesday while 17 others were injured, Iraq’s human rights committee said.
Iraqis have congregated in the capital’s Tahrir Square for weeks demanding an overhaul of the political system in the biggest wave of mass protests since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003. The death toll came as Iraq’s military spokesman said security forces were ordered not to use live fire on demonstrators.
“To avoid any confusion, clear and strict instructions have been handed down that no live ammunition be used. Orders have also been given not allow any live ammunition on the scene [of protests],” Major-General Abdul Karim Khalaf told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday.
3. Lashana Lynch speaks out about her historic bond role and how she handles the haters
Some people were more shaken than stirred to find out that Lashana Lynch is set to take over the role of 007 in the new James Bond movie. So she reached out to her haters.
In July, The Mail on Sunday reported that in the upcoming 25th film in the franchise, No Time to Die, the Lashana Lynch’s character, an agent named Nomi, is given the super spy’s famous code number 007 in a “pivotal” scene in which she is told to head to Jamaica to convince him to emerge from retirement to deal with a new crisis. The studio has not commented on the report and has remained mum on details about the film, which will see Daniel Craig reprise his role as the actual Bond for the fifth and final time.
Lashana Lynch’s takeover will mark the first time both a black and female star will technically play “007.” Some people, namely die-hard Bond fans and mainly men, have expressed anger and annoyance about this on social media.
“It doesn’t dishearten me,” Lynch told The Hollywood Reporter in a cover interview released on Wednesday. “It makes me feel quite sad for some people because their opinions, they’re not even from a mean place—they’re actually from a sad place. It’s not about me. People are reacting to an idea, which has nothing to do with my life.“
She also told the outlet that she has occasionally messaged haters back, usually saying something very nice.
4. Mozambique police boss arrested over election observer’s death
Mozambican police have detained the head of an elite unit allegedly involved in the murder of a prominent poll observer in the run-up to elections last month. Anastacio Matavel, 58, was shot dead as he left an election training session in the southern Gaza province just days ahead of October’s elections.
Tudelo Guirrugo, the commander of the Gaza rapid intervention force, was arrested after officials launched a commission of inquiry into the murder. The case was in the “preparatory stage” and the investigation still ongoing, police spokesman Orlando Mudumane told the media.
Five men armed with assault rifles shot Mr Matavel 10 times before fleeing in a car, which crashed during their getaway. Two died in the crash, one was arrested and two remain at large, police said. Four of the five men in the car were members of the rapid intervention force, authorities said at the time.
5. Nicola Adams retires: ‘I tore the pupil in my eye in last fight’
Two-time Olympic champion Nicola Adams has revealed she suffered a torn pupil in her last fight, leading to fears for her sight. The 37-year-old, who announced her retirement on Wednesday, told the media that initially, she thought it was just a minor injury. The Briton became the first female Olympic boxing champion at London 2012.
Announcing her retirement in the Yorkshire Post she said: “I’ve been advised that any further impact to my eye would most likely lead to irreparable damage and permanent vision loss.”
