Brad Pitt’s F1 Puts Apple On The Box Office Map With First Theatrical Breakout

Brad Pitt and Apple Studios have roared onto the theatrical scene with F1, marking the tech giant’s first true box office triumph. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, best known for Top Gun: Maverick, and produced by Hollywood heavyweight Jerry Bruckheimer and Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton, the film debuted to impressive numbers: $55.6 million domestically and a staggering $144 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

Starring Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a retired Formula 1 driver lured back to the track, F1 delivers more than just high-speed thrills. It also marks a pivotal moment for Apple Studios. After years of prioritizing streaming, this theatrical release signals a calculated pivot toward big-screen dominance—and it’s paying off in both dollars and buzz.

In collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures, F1 launched globally on June 27 and raced into the summer box office with a stunning $112.4 million worldwide debut. Not only did the film outperform early projections, but it also secured the biggest global opening of Brad Pitt’s career, surpassing World War Z’s $112 million launch back in 2013.

Jamie Erlicht, Apple’s Head of Worldwide Video, praised the achievement, stating, “This success is a testament to the vision of Joe, Jerry, Brad, and Lewis, along with the efforts of the entire cast and crew. Together with Formula 1, they’ve created an inspiring cinematic journey that captures the energy and spirit of the sport.”

International markets were a key driver of the film’s momentum, contributing a remarkable $88.4 million to its global total. Much of that can be attributed to strong word-of-mouth buzz and the film’s commanding presence across premium large-format (PLF) screens like IMAX and Dolby Cinema. With F1 holding exclusive access to these coveted formats until Superman lands in theaters on July 11, the film is well-positioned to maintain its box office edge in the weeks ahead.

Pitt’s portrayal of Sonny Hayes is far more than a typical star turn—it’s the result of rigorous preparation and a genuine passion for authenticity. According to director Joseph Kosinski, the actor’s skills behind the wheel were put to the test early on by none other than Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton, who also serves as a producer on the film. Impressively, Pitt passed with flying colors.

“We had the best drivers in the world training him,” Kosinski revealed. “He had been on the simulator. So we did everything the right way. We were in a [Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile]-approved car—this wasn’t a movie car. This is a real race car with the safety cell and everything. So we were doing it the right way.”

To ensure that level of realism, stunt coordinator Luciano Bacheta—an accomplished Formula 2 driver—led an intensive three-month bootcamp for Pitt and co-star Damson Idris. The actors trained on legendary circuits including Paul Ricard, Rockingham, and Silverstone, learning everything from tire dynamics and braking zones to grid alignment. By the time filming kicked off at the 2023 British Grand Prix, they weren’t just acting—they were racing. Scenes were captured live, alongside real F1 teams and under authentic race-day conditions, adding a rare level of adrenaline-pumping realism to the film.

Real Speed, Real Thrills: A Cinematic Experience Like No Other

One of F1’s most breathtaking feats is its commitment to visual authenticity. Rather than relying heavily on CGI, the filmmakers partnered directly with Formula 1 teams to capture real footage during official Grand Prix events. This rare collaboration granted the production exclusive access to car telemetry, onboard cameras, and the unmistakable race-day atmosphere—elements that few, if any, racing films have ever achieved on this scale.

That raw material was then masterfully woven with studio-shot scenes, resulting in a viewing experience that feels as immediate as it is immersive. From the thunderous roar of the engines to the screech of tires gripping asphalt and the swelling energy of the crowd, the sound design drops viewers straight into the cockpit. As producer Marty Bowen put it, “The authenticity was non-negotiable. Our fans know when racing is real or fake. We wanted to deliver the adrenaline without compromise.”

A Strategic Victory for Apple—and a Boost for Formula 1

From a business standpoint, F1 is more than just a blockbuster—it marks a strategic turning point for Apple Original Films. With a reported production budget of $250 million and total spend (including marketing) soaring past $350 million, the film stands as Apple’s boldest theatrical investment to date.

While long-term profitability will hinge on sustained box office performance and eventual streaming success on Apple TV+, early results send a clear message: Apple is no longer just playing in Hollywood—it’s a serious contender.

At the same time, the global Formula 1 phenomenon is accelerating. Liberty Media’s F1 stock has surged nearly 15% in 2025, fueled in part by renewed competition over broadcast rights. Tech giants like Apple, Amazon, and Netflix are now locked in bidding wars for future streaming deals—clear evidence that the sport’s momentum is revving higher, both on and off the track.

After years of taking on everything from gritty dramas to indie gems, Brad Pitt is officially back in blockbuster territory. F1 might just be his most crowd-pleasing role in a decade. Some fans—and even critics—are calling it his “Drive moment.”

Yet, it’s more than star power that makes this performance shine. What truly elevates it is Pitt’s deep commitment to realism. Working closely with F1 legends, he didn’t just play a driver—he trained like one. In many ways, he became one.
