The Vodacom Durban July is not just one of the biggest horse racing event in Africa, it is one of the major social and fashion events in South Africa and for 2019, the theme for the event was “Stars of Africa.”

Vodacom Durban July 2019 happens to be the 123rd edition of the race and in honour of the theme, the stars definitely came out to shine. There is no racing event without glamorous fashion and for VDJ 2019, stars from South Africa, Nigeria and other parts of Africa gathered in top style at Durban’s Greyville Racecourse.

The event, which brings the who’s who of the entertainment industry and lovers of luxury lifestyle to KwaZulu-Natal’s stores, also had a Raceday Fashion Competition where winners were chosen under various categories, a morning and evening horse race tournament, with the day ending with performances by the likes of AKA at an afterparty.

With the theme, the stars of Africa were implored to celebrate culture with modern zest, but did they? Well, while most of our favourites did step out in really rave-worthy looks, only a few – mostly the men, put a noticeable touch of African culture into their looks.

Nigeria’s Toke Makinwa showed up in a velvet green embellished two-piece designed by Mai Atafo and styled by Harvella. On the host side, Boity Thulo came dazzling in an over-embellished mono-sleeve purple attire by Orapeleng Modutle while Sarah Langa Mackay took a different direction in a sexy all-white tux complete with a matching bedazzled large brim hat. Trust the gents not to be left out of the slayage as South Africa’s Somizi’s outfit featured an enormous rose and a detachable train.
