Ryan Reynolds Teases A New ‘Ensemble’ Project: Is It Another Deadpool Movie Or Something Else?

Ryan Reynolds has once again set the internet ablaze. This time with a tantalizing tease about his next big “ensemble” project. Speaking at the 2025 TIME 100 Summit, the actor revealed he’s “writing a little something right now that is an ensemble” film, instantly igniting a wildfire of speculation among fans and industry insiders alike. Naturally, the question on everyone’s lips: is this another Deadpool installment, or is Reynolds charting a bold new creative course?

The buzz is especially intense given the record-breaking success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which hauled in over $1.33 billion at the global box office. That blockbuster not only reaffirmed Deadpool’s enduring popularity, but also served as a much-needed adrenaline shot for Marvel Studios.

Since Avengers: Endgame, Marvel has released more than a dozen films over five years—many of which have struggled to reignite the same level of enthusiasm, with audiences expressing signs of superhero fatigue. Yet Deadpool & Wolverine managed to cut through the noise, delivering a sharp, irreverent jolt of humor and fan service that reminded audiences why they fell in love with the MCU in the first place.

Deadpool’s Potential Return?

Given Ryan Reynolds’ deep, unwavering bond with the Deadpool universe, it’s no surprise that fans are already speculating whether this mysterious “ensemble” project is yet another chapter in Wade Wilson’s delightfully chaotic saga. That speculation isn’t without merit. Reynolds has previously teased the possibility of a Deadpool holiday special, even going as far as sharing behind-the-scenes snippets—complete with festive set pieces and a cameo from fan-favorite Leslie Uggams, who plays the ever-iconic Blind Al.

As if that weren’t enough to keep the rumor mill turning, Reynolds was asked point-blank during his TIME 100 Summit panel by moderator Eliana Dockterman about Deadpool’s potential involvement in a future Avengers film. Specifically, she asked whether audiences might see the Merc with a Mouth stepping into a supporting role. Reynolds’ answer? A simple but loaded, “I do,” followed by a more reflective detour into his personal journey bringing Deadpool to life—starting from the character’s widely panned debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009.

“The whole movie was an allegory for Disney buying Fox. I pitched 18 different movies to them,” Reynolds revealed. “I was really grateful to get to tell a story, to see people like the characters that we made with Wesley Snipes, who should have a third act in this moment. … That feeling of gasp … it’s a feeling that I just want more of. And I think I would be able to do that as a supporting actor.”

In the same breath, Reynolds teased his upcoming project: “I’m writing something right now… It’s a little ensemble, but I like that he’s isolated.”

A New Direction: ‘Boy Band’

Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool has rarely played second fiddle. With the notable exception of X-Men Origins: Wolverine—where he portrayed a wildly unrecognizable version of Wade Wilson—the character has always commanded the spotlight. Both Fox and Marvel Studios have reaped major success by keeping Deadpool front and center, letting his irreverent charm and fourth-wall-breaking antics lead the charge. However, Reynolds’ recent openness to shifting Deadpool into more of a supporting role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe signals a notable pivot—one that could unlock fresh, unexpected directions for the character and whatever “ensemble” project Reynolds is quietly cooking up next.

But hold on—the Deadpool ensemble theory might be off the mark. Rob Liefeld, Deadpool’s co-creator, recently dropped a key clue on X (formerly Twitter). “Gentle reminder that he is writing a movie called Boy Band,” he wrote. A quick dig confirms it: Boy Band is almost certainly the ensemble project Reynolds teased at the TIME 100 Summit.

This changes everything. Instead of another Marvel chapter, Reynolds seems to be stepping into fresh territory. Boy Band is said to follow former boy band members in their 40s or 50s. Long past their fame, they’re trying to reclaim their lives—and maybe some dignity. It’s a far cry from superheroes and explosions.

Reynolds called the film a “creative” project with a smaller budget. The focus? Character-driven storytelling. He also revealed he’s now writing the second draft of the script. The first was penned by Me and Earl and the Dying Girl writer Jesse Andrews. “The first draft was incredible,” Reynolds said. “Now I’m on my lonesome.”
