“It is with profound sadness we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” his management team said in a statement.

Mitte rose to international prominence in 2008 when he was cast as Walter White Jr., also known as Flynn, in “Breaking Bad.“ Created by Vince Gilligan, the series followed chemistry teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, as he entered the criminal world of manufacturing methamphetamine.
Mitte appeared in 56 episodes throughout the show’s five-season run, portraying the teenage son of Walter White and Skyler White, played by Anna Gunn. His character became an important part of the series’ family dynamics as Walter’s criminal activities increasingly threatened those closest to him.
The role also carried personal significance. Mitte has cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects movement and coordination. Like his character, he lived with the condition in real life, although the actor did not require the same walking aids as his character. To prepare for the role, he adjusted his speech and used crutches to reflect the character’s physical experience.
His performance helped bring disability representation into one of television’s most celebrated dramas. In 2014, Mitte and his fellow cast members received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
“Breaking Bad” has continued to attract critical recognition since its conclusion, cementing its place among the most influential television dramas of the 21st century.
Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul Remember Their Co-Star
Bryan Cranston has written a tribute for his ‘Breaking Bad’ on-screen son RJ Mitte who tragically passed away due to suicide.
“We were texting each other just a few weeks ago – figuring out when we could meet for lunch. I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future… But I do know that I loved him.”

Following news of Mitte’s death, several members of the “Breaking Bad” cast shared tributes to the actor.
Cranston, who portrayed Mitte’s on-screen father, expressed his grief in a heartfelt message. He remembered the actor’s determination while working on the demanding production and reflected on the relationship they developed during the series.
“He met the demanding shooting schedule head-on with great determination,” Cranston wrote, recalling Mitte’s attitude on set.
Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, also shared a message expressing his heartbreak over the loss. His tribute included a reminder that people experiencing difficult moments should not feel they have to face them alone.
Dean Norris, who portrayed Hank Schrader, joined the tributes, remembering Mitte as a kind person who brought warmth to the set.
The messages reflected the close relationships formed among the cast during the show’s production, which ran from 2008 to 2013.
A Lifelong Advocate for Disability Representation
Before his death, RJ Mitte opened up about battling the constant pressure of his disability affecting his career, an experience he described as both physically and mentally draining🥀🕊️

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1992, Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child. He underwent physical therapy and used leg braces during his early years, later working to improve his mobility through exercise and athletic training.
His experiences informed much of his work beyond acting. Mitte became a prominent advocate for performers with disabilities, speaking about the need for more authentic representation and greater access to opportunities in the entertainment industry.
He served as a celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and supported initiatives connected to disability awareness and children’s health. He also worked with the Screen Actors Guild to promote opportunities for actors with disabilities.
Mitte frequently challenged Hollywood to move beyond stereotypical portrayals of disabled characters. In interviews, he argued that disability should not prevent performers from being considered for roles and that characters with disabilities should be allowed to exist beyond stories centered on their medical conditions.
His advocacy emphasized the importance of inclusive casting and creating opportunities for disabled performers to participate fully in film and television.
Mitte’s Career Beyond ‘Breaking Bad’
Although “Breaking Bad” remained his best-known project, Mitte continued to build a varied screen career after the series ended.
His television credits included “Switched at Birth” and the superhero satire “Guardians of Justice.” He also appeared in independent films, including the comedy “Standing Up for Sunny,” in which he played a stand-up comedian, and the sports drama “Triumph,“ where he portrayed a high school wrestler.
Mitte continued working on new projects in the months leading up to his death. He had been promoting “Talking to Strangers,“ described as a romantic tragedy about a loner living with cerebral palsy. His horror film “One Eye Open” was also scheduled for release.
His work across different genres reflected an effort to establish an acting career that extended beyond the character that first brought him international recognition.

Beyond his performances, Mitte leaves behind a legacy tied to his efforts to broaden disability representation in mainstream entertainment. Through interviews, public appearances, and advocacy work, he encouraged the industry to reconsider how disabled people are portrayed on screen and who gets the opportunity to tell their stories.
His career demonstrated that performers with disabilities could take on complex roles in major productions without being defined solely by their conditions. His advocacy also helped keep conversations about accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunity in the entertainment industry in the public eye.
As tributes continue to emerge from colleagues and fans, Mitte is being remembered not only for his contribution to “Breaking Bad” but also for his commitment to making Hollywood more inclusive.
