any women are stuck with hair that just wouldn’t grow. This might seem weird but it’s more common than we like to admit. Sometimes, your hair won’t grow and the reasons elude you because you have put a hundred percent into caring for it. You may have been in a hair rut forever, and it’s becoming embarrassing to let people in on how old your tresses are. Especially if you’ve been growing it for a while only to see the girl next door who transitioned five months ago reaching “Rapunzel status.” We are aware it’s not a pleasant feeling.

Rather than hide your hair incessantly beneath glamorous wigs, and avoid the entire situation of why your hair has chosen to be adamant and rebuff growth, attempt doing a little more research. Well, if you’re reading this article, it’s obvious you still care for your mane.

What are the causes of stunted hair growth?

Factors like genetics and aging might be obvious factors out of your control but other lifestyle choices like your diet and exercise routine also matter. We all want long, healthy, shiny, and split-free hair, and we know how frustrating it can be when that doesn’t seem feasible. Luckily, we’ve curated a few reasons why your hair won’t grow and useful tips to help reduce stunted hair growth.

#1. Stress level

Yes, stress plays a role in hair loss. Not only does it restrict the hair growth cycle, but it also decreases the quality of hair. Therefore, it is important to treat yourself to relaxing activities to decrease stress levels as your hair will thank you. Plus, it impacts your mental health.  

#2. Excessive heat

It’s old news, we know, but we just had to reiterate this reason anyway. The use of excessive heat can cause hair damage which in turn inhibits hair growth. Opt for a reverse air drying tool as they do the work and are a healthier styling option.

#3. Poor diet and exercise routine

Imagine binging on soda and fast food all day long while watching your veggies rot, and in turn, expecting healthy hair. Hopefully, this mental picture sends the message. If your hair is ever going to grow, you have to be dedicated to a healthier feeding pattern. Incorporate foods rich in protein, iron, biotin, and vitamins C, A, and E into your diet, and watch your hair finally heave a sigh of relief. You’ll ask the food, “Where have you been all my life?”

#4. Little to no hair care routine

Having a poor hair care regimen can not only stunt hair growth but also damage your hair and cause breakage. Make an effort to maintain a healthy hair care routine which should definitely include moisturizing. In addition, avoid the use of excessively hot water on the hair, as well as brushing or combing your hair forcefully. Finally, do keep in mind that not every product is great for your hair so it’s important to do your research and then, apply products with the right balance.

Aging is inevitable, and with it comes hair thinning and stunted growth. Also, it’s a time when we start to reap the results of our cumulative lifestyle choices. The hair growth cycle often reduces drastically with age as bounce and shine gradually deteriorate. So if you’re still young, it’s time to make the right choices for healthier hair in your advanced years.

You might want to look a little deeper into factors like genetics. The hair growth phase can be anywhere between two to six years and is sometimes influenced heavily by genetics. That’s probably why your colleague has longer hair even though she already cut her hair twice this year.

While it may seem like it’s not growing, the truth is, once your hair is damaged it won’t grow because it’s breaking or shedding off even faster than adding length. To achieve healthy hair that can withstand damage, try as much as possible to avoid over or under-care.

Nobody likes glaringly uneven hair, especially when it was not the hairstyle we hoped to achieve on our trip to the stylist. Trim split ends and inculcate a deep treatment hair care routine to help rebuild your hair.

#8. Health issues and medical treatments

Certain health issues and medications can hinder hair growth. Some of these include but are not limited to certain blood pressure medications, chemotherapy, and even childbirth (yes I said it). While childbirth in itself is not a health issue, the body undergoes a lot of hormonal changes. There is also the usual hair loss in some pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Other health issues like anemia and thyroid disorders cause poor hair growth. Regular checkups should never be taken for granted. Take treatments seriously, and find healthier, safer ways to improve hair growth.

#9. Unhealthy scalp

It’s not rocket science but it’s worthy of mention. An unhappy scalp can’t stimulate proper hair growth. In this case, you need to keep the scalp clean by using products to remove excess sebum and buildup. This process would help create an enabling environment for your hair to thrive. Speak to your dermatologist if you notice you have scalp fungus or dandruff, and seek treatment options to help tackle the problem early.

Furthermore, studies have shown that massaging the scalp for at least 4 minutes every day increases blood flow to the scalp and stimulates hair growth. Scalp massagers are an absolute option on days when you’d rather not DIY. Consider investing in one as all we want is a job well done.

The first step was trying to figure out the reasons why your hair won’t grow, which we have (hopefully), and the better news is realizing some of these factors are preventable. Next stop, try to provide your hair follicles with the right nourishment it needs and make sure to take your vitamins, lower your stress levels, and most of all be patient and know that you’re not alone on this journey.
