That is exactly what Nike is doing with the upcoming Nike’s Air Tech Challenge 2 “Mag,” a retro-inspired release that borrows the unmistakable color palette of the Nike Air Mag from Back to the Future Part II and applies it to one of the most recognizable tennis silhouettes of the 1990s.
The timing is fitting, too. With the 2026 US Open approaching, the Nike’s Air Tech Challenge 2 “Mag” arrives as another reminder of just how much tennis footwear has influenced sneaker culture. Rather than simply recreating the futuristic Air Mag, Nike is letting the Air Tech Challenge 2 do the time traveling, combining its unmistakable Agassi-era shape with colors pulled straight from the movies.
A Tennis Icon Meets a Sci-Fi Classic
Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the Air Tech Challenge II originally emerged during the height of Andre Agassi’s career. The mid-cut tennis shoe quickly stood apart from the cleaner, more traditional footwear being worn on courts at the time, thanks to its visible Max Air heel unit, padded foam collar and chunky rubber outsole.
Agassi’s personality made the shoe even more memorable. He became closely associated with the Air Tech Challenge II, particularly its loud and unconventional colorways, helping establish the model as a cultural touchstone far beyond tennis. Nike has leaned back into that history in recent years, including the return of the iconic “Hot Lava” colorway in 2024 and additional retro editions that followed.
Now, the silhouette is getting a very different kind of nostalgia treatment.
The Air Tech Challenge II Goes Back to the Future
The inspiration behind the Nike’s Air Tech Challenge 2 “Mag” is impossible to miss. The shoe takes cues from the Air Mag worn by Marty McFly in “Back to the Future Part II,” the 1989 film that imagined a futuristic 2015 filled with hoverboards, flying cars and self-lacing sneakers.
For the Air Tech Challenge II, Nike translates that futuristic palette into a decidedly ’90s tennis package. The upper arrives in a muted “Photon Dust” gray, while “Dusty Cactus” teal accents appear around the lower portion of the shoe. The tongue brings additional energy with a red-to-orange gradient incorporated into the Nike branding.
The midsole adds another playful detail. Blue speckles spread across the gray foam, while the translucent outsole gives the sneaker a slightly more futuristic finish. Together, the details create something that feels recognizable without turning the Air Tech Challenge II into a literal Air Mag replica.
It is essentially a McFly-inspired makeover for Agassi’s signature court shoe.
Why the Colorway Works
What makes the Nike’s Air Tech Challenge 2 “Mag” particularly interesting is that the two inspirations come from almost the same cultural moment. The Air Tech Challenge II belongs firmly to the late-’80s and early-’90s tennis world, while the Air Mag was introduced to audiences in “Back to the Future Part II” in 1989.
That overlap gives Nike plenty of room to play with nostalgia without making the collaboration feel forced. The gray base keeps the sneaker relatively understated, while the teal and gradient accents provide the visual punch associated with both the Air Mag and the colorful tennis footwear of Agassi’s era.
It also follows Nike’s long-running interest in translating the Air Mag aesthetic to other silhouettes. The Air Mag itself became a real-world product decades after the movie, most notably through Nike’s 2016 self-lacing release. Its visual identity, however, has continued to appear across the brand’s footwear.
The Air Tech Challenge II might be one of the more convincing homes for it yet.
Release Date and Price
Nike has now confirmed that the Nike’s Air Tech Challenge 2 “Mag” will release on August 18, 2026. The sneaker will be available through the SNKRS app and select retailers, with a retail price of $180. The official color description is listed as “Photon Dust/Dusty Cactus-Picante Red-White,” while the style code is IX4084-025.
The $180 price tag puts this version above the standard Air Tech Challenge II, which currently sits around the $155 mark on Nike’s website for one of its regular editions.
A Timely Drop for Tennis Fans
The August 18 release also puts the Nike’s Air Tech Challenge 2 “Mag” just ahead of the 2026 US Open, making the timing particularly appropriate for a sneaker so closely connected to tennis history.
Whether you’re approaching it as an Agassi fan, a Back to the Future obsessive or simply someone who appreciates a good retro colorway, the shoe manages to tell two stories at once. It has the attitude of a ’90s tennis classic but the visual language of one of cinema’s most famous futuristic sneakers.
