With Kinló, Naomi Osaka takes her first steps as an entrepreneur in the popular field of skin care as she unveils her new line. According to the brand’s website, the name “Kinlò” is inspired by Osaka’s multicultural background, as the word is derived from the Japanese and Haitian words for “gold.”
The tennis pro, who recently created an upcycled denim collaboration with Levi’s, launched the new skincare brand on Tuesday, September 7. According to the four-time Grand Slam tennis champion, who announced her break from tennis following her exit from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics games, she has worked hard on the brand for a year. The 23-year-old noted on Instagram that she decided to embrace the project after learning about the high rates of skin cancer and related deaths among people of color. Consequently, the functional skincare line is designed for people with dark skin.
Kinló comprises “active and recovery skincare products designed to protect and rejuvenate mixed skin tones,” and also includes a mineral-based, non-chemical SPF50+ sunscreen that mattifies the skin without leaving a white cast for a natural, flawless finish. It is priced at $19.99. Also, the line carries an eye cream that nourishes sensitive eyelids and under-eye areas, which costs $14.99.
The inaugural four-product line also carries a hydrating golden mist with the healing properties of calendula and aloe vera for $14.99, and a lip balm. If you prefer to buy the skincare set, they can be gotten at $50 against the $56 value.
In order to launch the line, Naomi Osaka worked with GoDaddy to create a custom website and online store, and partners at A-Frame–a Los Angeles-based holding company that develops talent-led sustainable personal care brands built for underserved communities. She is also working with Dr. Naana Boakye who is serving as dermatology director to help ensure formulations are of the highest efficiency and standard and that education is a priority. As CEO, Naomi has named Vanessa Motley Coleman as her vice president and Vanessa will oversee business operations along with the global team at A-Frame, to bring its vision to life.
