Meta Connect 2026 was the clearest statement yet of the specific vision Mark Zuckerberg has been building toward for roughly a decade: a future where the smartphone is replaced by glasses, where AI sits on your face rather than in your pocket, and where the boundary between the physical world and the digital one is managed through lenses rather than screens.
Held on September 23, the event showed just how near that future actually is. Four new hardware devices were announced, spanning virtual reality, audio-only smart glasses, third-generation AI frames, and a surprise pendant-style AI device called the Muse Charm. The Ray-Ban Meta partnership, which produced the best-selling AI glasses on the market, expanded in two new directions simultaneously. And the Meta VR Glasses, the company’s most direct challenge to Apple Vision Pro, were shown in public for the first time.

The keynote covered a significant amount of ground in a short period, mixing hardware reveals with software updates across the Meta ecosystem. Beat Saber is receiving its biggest update in the platform’s history, including hand-tracking support that removes the need for Touch Plus controllers.
Disney content is coming to the Meta VR platform in a new 3D streaming format. Full-body holographic video calls, using the VR Glasses’ spatial audio and display capabilities, are part of the device’s launch feature set. The hardware is the headline, but the software updates suggest Meta is thinking seriously about what the VR glasses ecosystem needs to look like when the device ships in Spring 2027.
Meta’s Push Toward a Glasses-First Future
The Meta VR Glasses are the centerpiece of Meta Connect 2026 and the most significant hardware the company has announced in years. At approximately 100 grams for the frame itself, they are dramatically lighter than the Apple Vision Pro, which weighs around 600 grams including its battery pack.
The weight reduction is achieved through a tethered design. The Snapdragon Reality Elite chipset, battery, and storage are housed in a separate puck that the user carries rather than wears, while the frame contains only the 5K micro-OLED display, pancake lenses, and sensors for eye tracking and hand gesture control.
The trade-off is a three-hour playback limit per charge on the puck, which puts the Meta VR Glasses in a different use-case category than the Vision Pro’s more flexible setup. Priced at $1,299, the device is positioned as an entertainment and productivity tool rather than a full spatial computing platform.
Dolby Atmos spatial audio and Dolby Vision are both supported. Full-body holographic calling is a launch feature, while the Meta Quest game catalog is fully compatible. The Meta VR Glasses ship in Spring 2027 and are not yet available for pre-order.
Ray-Ban Meta Splits the Smart Glasses Playbook
The Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses are the more surprising of the two new frames and arguably the more interesting. By removing the camera entirely, Meta has addressed the primary criticism that has followed the Ray-Ban Meta line since its launch: the privacy concern that the glasses can record people without their knowledge.
The camera-free design also brings the weight down to 43 grams, making them the lightest glasses Meta has produced. It allows for frame shapes, including the Clubmaster and Burbank silhouettes, that were not possible with the camera’s internal components. The Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses support 12 hours of audio playback, hands-free AI interaction with the Meta Muse assistant, music, podcast, and call functionality. They are available for pre-order now at $349 and ship October 13.
The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, available immediately for $449, refreshes the existing camera frame with a slimmer chassis, a six-microphone array that Meta says reduces background noise by over 90 percent, and a 12-megapixel camera with 3K video recording.
It also introduces a customizable action button for direct access to Meta AI. Battery life extends to nine hours, one hour more than Gen 2. Two new frame styles, the Aviator and the Zena, join the existing lineup. The Gen 3 also supports Dolby Atmos audio recording, a first for the Ray-Ban Meta line.
Muse Charm Takes Meta AI Beyond the Glasses
The Muse Charm was the genuine surprise of Meta Connect 2026. A small pendant-style device worn around the neck or attached to a keychain, it contains Meta’s Muse AI agent in a standalone form factor that does not require glasses or a headset.
Pricing has not yet been confirmed, though the device is expected to ship this fall. The Muse AI itself received major updates at the keynote, including expanded shopping integrations with Walmart and Instacart, as well as a new private virtual environment called Muse Space that isolates AI interactions from the wider Meta platform.
A hearing enhancement feature was also announced for the glasses lineup, coming first to the Meta Glasses and later to the Ray-Ban Meta and Ray-Ban Meta Audio frames.
The feature costs a one-time fee of $149 after a 30-day trial, or is included with a Meta One subscription, and is eligible for FSA and HSA reimbursement in the United States.
Taken together, the Meta Connect 2026 announcements represent the most comprehensive hardware expansion the company has staged in a single event, and the clearest indication yet that Zuckerberg’s glasses-first vision of computing is no longer a long-term bet. It is the current product roadmap.
