Met Gala 2024: 35 Of The Most Rave-worthy Looks Of The Night

T
he first Monday of May transformed the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s steps into a fantastical runway for the 2024 Met Gala. This year’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” based on English writer J.G. Ballard’s 1962 dystopian short story of the same name, inspired a captivating blend of floral motifs, historical references, and futuristic embellishments. As always, celebrities pulled out all the stops to deliver a night of unforgettable fashion moments.

The “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition, the Costume Institute’s latest offering, undoubtedly influenced many looks. Zendaya, ever the red carpet chameleon, arrived in a custom haute couture look from Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano. The emerald green and electric blue gown is a custom design made of organza and sage-hued lamé crafted of a corset of duchess satin, with hand-painted metallic details, a drape, and bow layered from aluminum and iridescent organza, and finished with a hand-embroidered corsage.

Her second outfit was a surprise archival look from John Galliano’s first haute-couture collection for Givenchy in January 1996. This time, she embodied a countess, draped in an all-black look from Maison Margiela. Artisanal by John Galliano that cascaded onto a train. The dress, a modern interpretation of a sleeping beauty awakened, proved a masterclass in thematic execution.

For her first appearance at the 2024 Met Gala, Tyla swapped her usual style for something inspired by the evening’s theme. Collaborating with the fashion house Balmain, she chose an imaginative outfit that perfectly matched the event’s theme, “Garden of Time.” The Balmain designers crafted a unique dress for her made from sand, cleverly paying tribute to the idea of the “sands of time.” The dress was designed to fit closely around her body, then expanded at the bottom into a flowing mermaid-style train made of organza. The dress featured three different sand colors and was sprinkled with tiny crystal studs, which made it sparkle whenever she moved. Adding a fun touch that tied back to the theme, Tyla carried a Balmain clutch shaped like an hourglass.

Designer Harris Reed accompanied Demi Moore on the red carpet and shared details about her dress. He explained that the gown required 11,000 hours of work to embroider with silk and was crafted using vintage wallpaper. Reed described the concept behind the dress as inspired by Victorian times, imagining Moore like a beautiful flower at its peak bloom on the red carpet, surrounded by thorns. This design aimed to capture the image of a stunning flower in the perfect moment of its flowering.

The night wouldn’t be complete without a few show-stopping moments. Cardi B really knows how to impress with her fashion choices. At the 2024 Met Gala, she wore the biggest dress ever seen at the event, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Her huge black dress by Giambattista Valli spread out all around her on the carpet. She also wore a tall, beehive-style headpiece and stunning emerald jewelry that matched the event’s garden-themed backdrop. This was her fifth time attending the biggest night in fashion, where this year’s theme was “The Garden of Time.”

At the event, while a few men stuck with the classics, others chose more striking designs for the evening. Rapper, Bad Bunny—born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio—was clad in a riveting matador-inspired ensemble by Maison Margiela, complete with a matching headwear. Influencer and model Wisdom Kaye wore a bold red Robert Wun look while actor and musician Jeff Goldblum dressed like a count from the night’s theme inspiring story. He added a bit of flair with a pair of dark green sunglasses, hinting at his upcoming role in “Wicked.”

The 2024 Met Gala proved to be a night of breathtaking fashion that transcended mere trends. It was a celebration of creativity, pushing the boundaries of what fashion can be. From historical references to futuristic visions, celebrities embraced the theme with gusto, delivering a night filled with unforgettable red carpet moments.
