In a groundbreaking move to empower the next generation of leaders, Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, is spearheading scholarship initiatives. As the company announced on Friday, June 7, the initiative aims at assisting underprivileged students in Philadelphia with $300 million worth of scholarships.
“We have enjoyed such a special connection with Philadelphians, so we’ve made it our mission to invest in the long-term success of the city’s change makers,” said Dania Diaz, Roc Nation’s Managing Director of Philanthropy. “Impact starts with the students and with awareness. We want to empower the youth and families with the knowledge to pursue their scholastic dreams, make their voices heard, and become the leaders of tomorrow.”

The scholarship initiative, which falls under the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS), will focus on assisting students from kindergarten to Grade 12. This ambitious program will enable the students to access prestigious private schools and educational institutions across the city.
According to Billboard, students will get different sums of money for scholarships, depending on their age group and educational level. Half-day kindergarten students will receive $2,500, K-8th graders will be awarded $5,000, and high school students can secure $10,000. Children with disabilities of any age will be eligible for $15,000 in scholarship funding. To be eligible for a scholarship, a student’s family cannot make more than 250% of the federal poverty threshold, which currently sits at $75,000 for families of four.

To spread awareness about the PASS program, also known as Senate Bill 757, Roc Nation will host a series of events throughout the Philadelphia region from June 10 to June 21. These events will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn more about the scholarship program.
Roc Nation’s commitment to uplifting and connecting with the Philadelphia community is not new. The company has previously hosted several events, such as the annual Made in America festival on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. It has equally collaborated with the REFORM Alliance to help pass legislation benefiting citizens on parole or probation in Pennsylvania. This latest initiative solidifies Roc Nation’s position as a champion of education and community development.
