Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has confirmed that the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI is still set for a fall 2025 release. The announcement comes as a welcome relief to millions of gamers worldwide who have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the iconic series, especially after a wave of rumors and speculation surrounding potential delays.
Back in May, Take-Two Interactive confirmed a fall 2025 launch for GTA VI, a timeline that seemed likely after the game’s official trailer dropped last December. Now, in their latest financial briefing, CEO Strauss Zelnick has doubled down on that announcement, expressing the company’s “high confidence” in the release window for the highly anticipated title.
Grand Theft Auto VI Release: A Perfecting Pursuit
When CNBC asked how Take-Two determines the timing of a game’s release, Zelnick explained that several factors can be measured before launch, including the resolution of bugs and other technical elements. “However, in the case of an extraordinary title (GTA 6), for which there are extraordinary expectations, it’s not really about bugs,” he went on. “It’s about creating an experience that no one’s seen before, and Rockstar Games seeks perfection in what they do. And perfection is indeed hard to measure, it really is more subjective than objective.”
Zelnick continued by acknowledging that while there is “slippage in the industry and [Take-Two isn’t] immune from that,” the company is highly confident in the timing of a fall 2025 release window. Unfortunately, Grand Theft Auto VI is currently confirmed only for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with no release date set for the PC version. Rockstar has a history of launching games on consoles first, followed by PC releases—GTA V being a prime example. While a PC version of GTA VI is expected eventually, the best-case scenario for PC gamers might see the game arriving as late as 2026.
“We’re seeing great growth in PC right now, for example. I have been of the view that open formats would continue to grow and PC is an open format. I do think PC will continue to be a more and more important part of the console business going forward, and that isn’t complicated for us to support at all,” Zelnick said in the company’s latest earnings call via Gamesradar. “So the bottom line is, we are selective about which platforms we support. We make the tech work when we can make it work, as long as the audience is big enough to make that worthwhile.”
No Clash with Other Big Releases
The release of Grand Theft Auto VI will be accompanied by a lineup of 2K’s upcoming titles, including Civilization 7, WWE 2K25, Borderlands 4, and Mafia: The Old Country. In a conversation with Variety, CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed concerns about the timing of GTA VI and Borderlands 4, confirming that the two games will not be released simultaneously. Borderlands 4 is slated for release between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, and Zelnick stated, “I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily.”
As the release date draws nearer, excitement continues to build for the next chapter in the iconic Grand Theft Auto series. While details remain scarce, rumors and leaks suggest a sprawling, modern-day metropolis inspired by real-world cities like Miami and Vice City.
