Cristiano Ronaldo Leaves Portugal Squad After Norway Game Fallout

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp in Denmark after the national team captain announced his decision on Wednesday following reports of a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo said he would reveal the reasons behind his departure “in due course,” adding that he had spoken with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before leaving the squad.

The departure comes after Cristiano Ronaldo was left on the bench for Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win over Norway on Sunday. The forward did not make an appearance in the match and had not trained with his teammates since the victory, prompting reports of growing tension between the 41-year-old and Jesus. The manager denied there had been any incident between them during his press conference earlier on Wednesday.

Ronaldo confirmed his departure in a post on Instagram shortly after Jesus spoke to the media ahead of Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark.

“Following the national team manager’s press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the national team’s training camp,” Ronaldo wrote.

The Portugal captain did not provide specific details about what led to his decision. Instead, he said he would explain the circumstances surrounding his departure at a later date.

“In due course, I will tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind my departure from the national team, to which I have always been dedicated,” he added.

Ronaldo concluded by wishing Portugal and his teammates success in their upcoming fixtures.

Jorge Jesus Denies Any Incident

Jesus had rejected reports of a rift with Ronaldo during his press conference earlier in the day.

“There was no incident whatsoever,” the Portugal manager said.

Jesus explained that Ronaldo had been informed before the Norway match that he would not start but could potentially be introduced later in the game. However, after assessing the circumstances of the match, he decided against bringing the veteran forward onto the pitch.

“Afterwards, as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It’s nothing to make a fuss about,” Jesus said.

The manager also dismissed suggestions that Ronaldo had refused to train following the Norway game. According to Jesus, the forward had been carrying out individual exercises focused on mobility and strengthening and was expected to return to regular team training.

Cristiano Ronaldo Did Not Play Against Norway

Ronaldo’s departure follows an unusual sequence of events surrounding Portugal’s victory in Oslo.

The Al Nassr forward had started Portugal’s opening Nations League match against Wales on Thursday but was substituted in the 67th minute after a frustrating performance. His appearance took his international tally to 234 caps.

Against Norway three days later, Ronaldo remained an unused substitute as Portugal secured a 2-1 victory. Gonçalo Ramos, who had replaced him in the lineup, scored the winning goal.

Ronaldo also did not join his teammates in acknowledging the visiting Portuguese supporters after the final whistle, instead heading toward the dressing room. He subsequently trained separately from the squad.

Jesus had indicated that Ramos would again be preferred against Denmark if he believed the striker was the better option for the match.

“If I need [Ronaldo], he’ll come on. If I don’t need him, he won’t,” Jesus said.

Portugal Confirms Ronaldo Has Left Camp

The Portuguese Football Federation later confirmed that Ronaldo had departed the national team’s training camp.

In a statement, the federation said preparations for the upcoming fixtures would continue with the remaining 24 players in the squad.

“The entire delegation remains totally focused on the national team’s next fixtures and on achieving the established objectives,” the federation said.

Ronaldo’s exit means he will not feature against Denmark on Thursday unless there is a subsequent change to the situation.

The circumstances surrounding his departure remain unclear, with neither Ronaldo nor the federation providing further details about the conversation that preceded his decision to leave.

Questions Remain Over His International Future

The latest development also comes at a significant point in Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career. The 41-year-old is Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.

Ronaldo previously acknowledged during the current international break that he had considered retiring from international football following the 2026 World Cup. He ultimately remained available for selection as Portugal continued its Nations League campaign.

He has also continued to pursue a personal target of reaching 1,000 career goals. Ronaldo currently has 979 goals across his professional career.

For now, however, his immediate future with Portugal is uncertain. Ronaldo has not formally announced his retirement from international football, but his decision to leave the squad ahead of the Denmark match leaves questions over when, or whether, he will return to the national team.

Portugal will continue preparations for its upcoming Nations League fixtures without its captain, while Ronaldo has indicated that a fuller explanation for his departure will come at a later date.
