The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom awards the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie the Africa Freedom Prize 2020. In her award-winning works, Adichie relentlessly addresses the central social grievances and political challenges of our time. As one of the most important intellectual champions of women’s rights, she inspires people around the world in their pursuit of freedom. The award was presented digitally on 14 December 2020.

“I very much appreciate the honour of The Africa Freedom Prize,” Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said about winning the award. “It is always gratifying to be recognised, and particularly so in this case, to join the good company of others who share my commitment to our beloved continent.”

2. Electoral College officially confirms Joe Biden’s presidential victory

United States President-elect Joe Biden claimed victory in the Electoral College after key battleground states gave him and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris a clear majority of electors. “The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. And we now know that nothing – not even the pandemic – or an abuse of power – can extinguish that flame,” Biden said in a televised address to the nation from Wilmington, Delaware, on Monday night.

There are 538 electors in the Electoral College and a majority of 270 is required to win. Biden went over the top earlier on Monday when California, the largest US state, cast its 55 electors for the Democratic ticket. The Pacific island state of Hawaii was the last to cast its votes, bringing Biden’s total to 306 electoral votes. Trump won 232.

3. South Africa: SK Khoza proposes to his girlfriend

Actor Sthembiso SK Khoza is officially off the market. This comes after the Housekeepers star asked his girlfriend Mandy Hlongwane to marry him on Instagram Live, and she said yes. SK posted a 37-minute video on his IGTV in which he started by thanking fans for voting for him as one of the best male actor nominees in the KZN Entertainment Awards which are set to take place this week.

Sometime later he was joined by Mandy who was preoccupied with her cell phone and that’s when SK asked his fans to help him ask Mandy the big question. Then he got down on one knee while Mandy tried to read and understand why everyone was writing “Will you marry me?” on Instagram live. After Mandy said yes, SK explained how he’s been waiting for so long to propose.

4. Ghana: John Dumelo’s wife celebrates him after his electoral defeat

The wife of John Dumelo has applauded him for making an effort to change people’s lives while vying for the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat. According to Gifty Dumelo, although the actor cum politician lost the election on his first try, losing by a small margin proved he had made an impact.

“You have really raised the status quo and you know what, you deserve a standing ovation. Congratulations on such a spectacular performance and making history in Ayawaso West,” she wrote.

5. Messi has not had negotiations with other clubs as rumors continue over Barcelona star’s future

Lionel Messi remains the subject of incessant exit rumors at Barcelona. Despite the noise generated by fake news, the media reports that the Argentine superstar is yet to be contacted by any other club. Naturally, as the six-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to run down his current contract, admiring glances from afar are being shot in the direction of an all-time great.

Various teams, amid talk of interest from the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, are keeping a close eye on events at Camp Nou. No future calls have been made as yet, though, with Messi and his representatives eager to point out that now is not the time to be discussing such matters – with Barca still searching for a spark in 2020-21. The 33-year-old’s father and his agent, will not be entering into discussions with any suitors at this stage.
