There’s nothing quite like a great pair of flat sandals. Not only can they make you feel stylish and cute, but they also give your toes some much-needed wiggle room. While some sandals are casual and summery, others flaunt an element of edge, and ultimately, they are all designed to elevate any outfit. Then there are the mostly utilitarian options—perfect for light hiking, doing chores, running errands, or whatever else you feel like doing without having to wear heavier footwear.
Additionally, even though women’s sandals tend to be lighter in construction than many other styles of shoes, they can still be just as sturdy and reliable as a pair of running shoes. For many women, the priority when buying their next pair of sandals is aesthetics.
This isn’t a bad starting point, but there are other factors to consider as well. For example, experts recommend getting cute women’s sandals that also offer some level of support. What if you prioritize form over function, though? In that case, you can still get a well-constructed pair of sandals that will support your feet no matter how long you wear them. So, what should you look for when you’re purchasing women’s sandals? We’ve got the answers.

#1. What you’ll be doing in them
Do you need some sandals for your next night out in town, or are you looking for a pair of lightweight shoes for your next camping trip? There are practically infinite styles of sandals out there, all of them designed for a specific purpose. It’s usually easy to tell which activities a sandal is made for just by looking at it, but there are other features available that you may want to look for specifically. These features include arch support, moisture-wicking interior soles, waterproofing, and more.
#2. How long you want them to last
A pair of flat sandals usually isn’t considered an investment, but it does make sense to spend more than the bare minimum on your next pair. Why? Because they’re more likely to last longer. Sure, there are rare instances of $15 options lasting for 10 years for no apparent reason, but those cheap sandals are more likely to last for six months and then end up in landfills. If you want a pair of sandals that will actually last, consider buying from a reputable brand that sells quality products. This is a case of quality being better than quantity. If you find a pair that you like, you should be able to enjoy them for more than just a few months.

Realistically, sandals aren’t the most orthopedically-friendly shoes you could wear. That being said, some of them do offer a level of support. Pretty much everyone has come home with a pair of shoes that don’t exactly fit. Usually, the reason for this was that they were just too cute to pass up, even if the toe box was a tad narrow or the heel chafed a little. This is less of a problem with sandals, but even the most basic women’s sandals can cause problems if they don’t fit correctly. If a strap is a little too tight or the shoe itself is a little too narrow or short, then simply don’t get it. Flat sandals may not provide that much support, but what they should do is not cause you pain.
