From Living In His Car To Hollywood, How Tyler Perry Became A Billionaire

Tyler Perry is an American entertainment mogul that needs no introduction. On the first day of this month, Forbes magazine declared Tyler Perry, the actor, writer, director, and producer, a billionaire. It’s worthy to note that Tyler Perry celebrates his 51st birthday on September 13.

According to the net worth appraising magazine, Tyler Perry’s net worth is estimated at $1 billion, “with a clear path to future membership in The Forbes 400.”

Being all of this in itself is a tale that needs telling. While Tyler Perry wrote and brought to screen authentic Black American stories such as the “Madea” franchise, “House of Payne” and the famed “Acrimony,” he was also writing his own story, one almost never heard in American history. All of these and more are what has made Tyler Perry a billionaire today. Tyler Perry net worth Billionaire Airport.

In his early 20s, Tyler, a high school dropout was inspired by an episode of the “Oprah Winfrey Show” to write about the struggles he had seen and faced growing up with an abusive father who wasn’t his father and a mother he lived to hear laughing. He would ultimately make America laugh–– a whole lot!

How Tyler Perry rose to success

Tyler’s initial success came with his self-created plays. All funded from the $12,000 he saved up and used to rent a community theatre in Atlanta. During this time, Tyler worked so hard and was so broke that he lived out of his car and had to sell intermission snacks along with tickets. However, that didn’t stop him from hanging the lights and creating shows that attracted a large audience. But success didn’t come overnight. In fact, his first few shows were met with very poor turnouts.

Still, Tyler Perry persevered and continued to perfect his craft. As he started to attract the right audience, his stage plays went from stationary to mobile, touring states until his character Madea became known in black neighborhoods and across America. The mothers loved him / Madea, the smart-mouthed and hilarious granny. Tyler continued to hang his lights until Hollywood came calling in his late 30s. By this time, he had already made a fortune out of his plays and had begun writing TV shows. He was ready for the limelight.

A tip Tyler Perry would always remember is advice from his now fellow billionaire, Oprah Winfrey, after she invited him to her show in 2001. She had just seen his play and in her words, she was “changed” by it. She taught him the importance of “writing his own checks” and being fully in control.

At the unveiling of Tyler Perry Studios earlier last year, as Tyler zipped around the 330 Acres property with a selected celebrity entourage he shared, “I own the lights. I own the sets, so that’s where the difference is. Because I own everything, my returns are higher.”

This is simply a summary of the tale of Tyler Perry’s success. Own everything. 41 movies, 17 plays on tour, and 15 shows later, all rights belong to Tyler Perry. With his billionaire status, it’s obvious that he is indeed fully in control.

For the Tyler Perry Studios, Tyler plans to include housing for trafficked women and LGBTQ youth, and an academy to teach kids who grew up like he did the things he never learned such as financial literacy. The studios also seek to pay it forward by providing jobs for black people as actors, writers, directors, and producers in the same industry where over two decades ago, he was being shut out.

Meanwhile, that is not all! Now, Tyler Perry is building a new mega estate outside Atlanta according to TMZ. Tyler Perry has been building his new castle over the past three years and the estate will include a farm and an airport runway. The 35,000-square-foot mansion on 1200 acres is reportedly 20 mins outside of Atlanta.
