Since the foundation of the Kruger National Park in 1898, and later, the installment of rail into the Park in the 1920s, the Park and rail travel have had a deeply interconnected history. It’s fitting that the new luxurious Kruger Shalati, Train on a Bridge Hotel, pays homage to this history.
Situated in South Africa and floating on a bridge above the Sabie River, the Kruger Shalati Train Hotel is a luxury hotel like no other. The hot spot is an initiative by Thebe Tourism Group. It comes with 31 rooms, each of which has been constructed within a former train car. Filled with local art and custom furnishings crafted in South Africa, the interior design is meant to celebrate local culture.
The unlikely idea and the unique setting of this luxury hotel came from the original use of the bridge. Back in the day, because there was no accommodation on land, the train would park on the railway for the duration of the night. This allowed travelers to get a proper night’s rest before continuing their journey the next day.
The rooms come with floor-to-ceiling glass walls so guests are able to duly enjoy being stationed at the border of the country’s first national park. Aside from the spacious rooms, the Shalati Lodge also boasts a custom deck. Guests can lounge and order a drink from the bar or go for a swim in the modern overhanging pool with Africa’s wildlife teaming just meters below.
Originally announced to open in December of 2019, the hotel is expected to begin welcoming guests in September of this year.
