For the first time in South Africa, the GQ Men of the Year Awards 2019 in association with Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilège held at the Houghton Hotel in Gauteng on Sunday night.
The GQ Men of The Year Awards holds with the aim of celebrating people who have made a considerable mark in their respective fields. For 2019, the event also served the purpose of marking GQ’s 20 years in South Africa. The GQ Men of the Year Awards ceremony honours people (of both genders) who shape South Africa’s cultural landscape.
For 2019, GQ released three covers which was photographed by Aart Verrips. The cover features Nasty C, Musician of the Year, Dr John Kani, who took home the Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilège Lifetime Achievement Award and Tristan Du Plessis, who was named the Designer of the year at the event.
According to GQ’s first African editor, Nkosiyati Khumalo,
“South Africans habitually dominate every field they touch. With that in mind, we thought the time was right to create a new celebration, right here at home, to honour the achievements of the men and women who define our culture today and who propel us forward.”
