PFW 18: Yves Saint Laurent SS19 Collection Was A Step By Step Display Of The Founder’s Catalogue

Staged at the back of the Trocadero Fountain which sits in front of the Eiffel Tower, Yves Saint Laurent’s latest collection was, simply put: a history lesson from the founder’s catalogue. The creative director, Anthony Vaccarello, literally mined ideas from past YSL looks, ranging from the 60s to somewhere around the 2000s.

He cleverly matched these looks with his own originality, which was quite evident in the overall collection as each model walked across the temporary pool of half-inch of water runway! Come through, originality, come through!

Rather than take lessons from just a particular era, Vaccarello decided to draw from several wells of history. This was responsible for most of the show’s production; such as the cigarette pants, the super-short shorts of the rock-glam era, the velvet tuxedo jackets and the polka-dot blouses.

One thing that was clear to editors as well as clients and show attendees, was Anthony’s ambition to uphold the Legacy of the founder of the house. Yves was known to empower women – hence the iconic power suits – and even a quick glance at this collection is a reminder of those values.

On his own, Anthony Vaccarello is known for highlighting the female form, and this trait can be seen all over the collection. He managed to still display his love for the colour black, even while giving most women their wardrobe essentials: that straight from work/beach to night club look, cute dresses, swimming costumes, sequins and boots – the whole sparkle and shine.

There was also another notable part of the runway: The white palm trees, done by the artiste, Vincent Lamouroux, as a reference to North Africa, where the founder of the house was from. This was an integral part of the show, as it was an ode to the late great Yves Saint Laurent!

Here are some of our fave looks from the collection…
