First, you have to know that there was a deity hovering over the runway of Coach’s SS19 New York Fashion Week show. This deity according to creative director Stuart Vevers was a massive dinosaur skeleton that was put together with hardware scraps. It’s depiction, an alien god, a mysterious force with a temple for worship. This mood definitely took the runway into a darker, deeper depth of what fashion by alien spices or humans might be in a post-apocalyptic time.
If you are getting sci-fi vibes you are definitely on the right path as Stuart Vevers turned his wondering into fashion. The runway was decorated in a colour that provokes an eerie sense of being and as the models walked out in unravelling dresses, sweatshirts with motifs, floor-length prairie skirts, aged leather coats, ghost-like jackets, patched jeans, weather friendly fur coats and fringe western coats, you definitely understand what Stuart said before the show.
“Scavengers, they’re not sure where they are. Have they landed on an alien planet? Are they hiding from something in the mountains? However they got here, they’re scavenging a bit of American culture, a bit of heir-looming.”
The collection was definitely a lot of things, and once you sieve out the distracting elements that are a part of the styling you would find familiarity to wearing some of the pieces. From the representation of the wild wild west to the optimism of modern fashion, Coach is riding on a new wave and new experiences.
Here’s a look at select pieces from the collection…
