Black and white, optical illusions, bold graphics: the décor of the haute couture SS18 reflected the surrealist inspirations of the majestic collection designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior. Chiuri brought avant-garde drama to the Paris runways with the use of directional prints that spoke to elements of the art genre.
Dior SS18 collection consisted of outfits that were fitted at the top, cinched in at the waist, flared skirts as long, tailored coat dresses displayed restraint with a semblance of elegance. Cloudy ecru chiffon, satin, and tulle creating bold texture and tones of black, grey and cream merging to make edgy, contemporary pieces. Ruffles, feathered butterflies, and glittering embellishments add a fairytale spin to this fashion-forward collection, which also features strong suiting for the modern woman. Immersing the surrealism-inspired designs with female-fantasy, designer Maria married the concepts that were also heavily invested in the #MeToo movement and female empowerment.
The temporary tattoos of the 90s were revived as models also wore exaggerated eyeliner and masks designed by milliner Stephen Jones. The tattoos featured French quotes and phrases and were applied in a way that made them look like necklaces on the models’ decolletage. Looking forward to the summer to see how this trend filters down. Just remember to pick something tasteful, or you’ll be wearing high neck blouses in the office until it rubs off!
