A life, style and culture writer with a borderline obsession…
With a career spanning almost 30 years, the life and times of American R&B singer-songwriter and actress Mary J Blige is one for the books. In the October 2020 Issue of Health Magazine, the star talks about navigating self-love as a key to a fulfilling life.
The legendary 49-year-old has had such an illustrious career since she was 18, selling more than 50 million records worldwide, winning nine Grammy Awards, and receiving three Golden Globes and two Academy Award nominations (Best Supporting Actress and Original Song for 2017’s Mudbound). It is, however, incomplete to highlight these successes without acknowledging the hurdles that were necessary for her journey. And for Mary, the journey has been one of growth into self-love. Mary Blige Self-love
Check out 5 ways Mary J Blige has been navigating self-love…
#1. She’s her own best friend
With the pandemic forcing everyone to slow down and stay indoors, Mary has learned to be her own best friend. Being someone who has always loved her own company, she says, “when you’re by yourself, you’re either going to be your own best friend and be honest and real with yourself, or you’re going to be your own worst enemy and deceive yourself. It’s been so clear to me that I am my best friend.” Mary Blige 2020 Self-love.
#2. She opens up about everything through her music
Her music has always been very vulnerable, and this is Mary’s way of upholding herself because she doesn’t believe that life’s many issues should be kept inside festering. “I think that we go through stuff to speak about it so we can help someone else heal,” she said about her music. This is exactly what she has continued to do. Mary Blige Self-love
#3. Choosing health and wellness is self-love
It’s not the easiest thing to exercise or the most enjoyable thing to eat more healthy with fewer carbs and cholesterol, but Mary has learned to push through the discomfort because when you love yourself, you’ll want to keep your body healthy. Sometimes, you have to do what you have to do. Mary Blige Self-love
#4. On speaking positivity over herself
For her mental health, Mary J. Blige’s method is two-fold; meditation and prayer. The singer/actress has learned to meditate and pray on the positives and speak actively against any negative thoughts. “It’s a constant job, and you have to stay on it.”
#5. Healing from her past through singing and wellness
Mary has talked about being sexually abused as a child and how singing to herself got her through the pain it brought. This is one of the ways she has dealt with her health consciously. Mary never stops singing. Mary Blige Self-love
