Mai Atafo’s “Sartorial Thursday” Narrative Makes Significant History At South African Menswear Week

After a not-so-successful outing for his SS13 collection at the 2012 MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week (MTN LFDW) and a groundbreaking presentation at the 2015 MTN LFDW that earned him major repute as a thinking designer not boxed in the art of tailoring boring suits, Ohimai Atafo has once again surpassed his best with his most recent offering tagged “Sartorial Thursday” which debuted at the just concluded South African Menswear Week for Spring/Summer 2016|2017.

According to Ohimai,

“I call the collection Sartorial Thursday. On Thursdays, you don’t want to look so serious but you also want to look like you can be serious. Everything in the collection has an option, you can tuck it in or out, it’s up to you.”

Mai Atafo, the eponymously named brand, has grown to become one of Nigeria’s most respected fashion houses. The brand now comprises two distinct lines; Mai Atafo Inspired|Bespoke – the menswear line; and Weddings by Mai.

Designer Ohimai is definitely driving the powerhouse of Mai Atafo through a more contemporary aesthetic tunnel that is hip, crisp, very commercial, culture blurring, and definitely more appealing than what the brand is known for. From well-tailored bomber jackets, styled impeccably well for the modern man, to paying homage to our culture from a more distilled perspective, Mai’s versatile range is definitely a trans-seasonal must-have for every man who has ever considered taking the extra cue on looking stylish.

Save the construction glitch on the double-breasted peak lapel tuxedo, from design direction to styling and color palette, Ohimao’s take on marrying classic staples, loungewear, sportswear, and culture-inspired pieces is, without doubt, a brilliant one that is interestingly artistic and above all retail-worthy. This is certainly the brand’s most engaging fashion conversation so far.
