The last time we saw Donatella Versace taking a bow, her brand was being acquired by Capri Holdings formerly Michael Kors for $2.1 billion. Although the deal isn’t going to be finalized till January, the company is set to take revenues from $850 million to $2 billion over the next couple of years, and so this Pre-Fall 2019 collection show, which is a first ever for the fashion house, indeed marks a new era for the brand.
Set in the Big Apple and held at the centre of the New York Stock Exchange, in true New York style, a replica of the statue of liberty adorned the show as models strutted the runway in richly tailored designs. The designer had this to say of her decision to have lady liberty present:
“Symbol of New York, but also a symbol of women, of empowerment and strength. Us women, we have to fight more than men usually.”
Donatella is certainly solidifying the foundation for the future of the brand. This explains why she dug into the archives once again to produce yet another hit collection. There was plenty of nod to Gianni’s work and the event held on a day that would have been the founder’s 72nd birthday. This stood as a great reason to take inspiration and cues from the brand’s older iconic collections. However, the runway also had contemporary outfits that would certainly draw the kids in. Hitting a $2 billion mark surely would take more effort than the haute couture demographic.
