1. Jay Z launches bitcoin academy

Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of and co-founder of Twitter and the founder of Block Inc., announced on Thursday that he has partnered with legendary rapper Jay Z (Shawn Carter) in order to launch a Bitcoin Academy. “Mr. [Shawn Carter] and I are funding The Bitcoin Academy, a program for residents of Marcy Houses in Brooklyn New York where Jay grew up,” Dorsey tweeted. The Block founder further explained that the project was also bolstered by Crypto Blockchain Plug Najah J. Roberts and Bitcoin Billionaire, Lamar Wilson.

Marcy House or Marcy Projects is a public housing complex located in Brooklyn, New York. Jay-Z lived there on Marcy Avenue when he was a kid, and he attended Eli Whitney High School. “Bitcoin is becoming a critical tool for many in Africa and Central and South America,” Dorsey continued in his Twitter thread. “We believe the same potential exists within communities in the U.S. Our goal is to prove that making powerful tools more available to people enables them to build greater independence.”

“Shout out to Jack,” Jay Z tweeted on Thursday. “Bitcoin Academy, starting in Marcy, a place that taught me so much, is hopefully the first of many. The simple goal is to provide people tools to build independence for themselves and then the community around them.”

2. Police under fire for assigning five officers to Burna Boy

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has carpeted the Lagos State Police command and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, for assigning five operatives of the Force to protect a musician, Burna Boy. The rights group said this sort of deployment which is absolutely irregular, has become the norm in the police force of Nigeria. HURIWA said this following a recent shooting at a Lagos nightclub, where Burna Boy’s police escorts shot at a man after the musician allegedly made passes at the man’s wife.

The Lagos State Police Commissioner’s Special Squad has since detained the five policemen attached to the singer for attempted murder. One of the policemen was said to have shot at two fun-seekers— Irebami Lawrence and another identified simply as Tolu, at Club Cubana on Victoria Island, Lagos, on Wednesday. According to a preliminary report by the Bar Beach Police Division, the trouble started when Burna Boy and his five police escorts entered the nightclub around 4:00 am on June 8.

While about four policemen waited outside, one of them, identified as Inspector Ibrahim, who was in mufti, accompanied the Grammy-Award-winning artiste into the club. The singer was in the VIP section with three women when he allegedly spotted another woman. However, the lady’s husband was said to have insulted the singer, insisting that it was disrespectful for any man to make advances on his wife. After some minutes, Burna Boy reportedly made fresh advances at the woman. This infuriated her husband further and his friends who had gathered at the club. Jay Z Bitcoin Academy

“As things were getting heated, Ibrahim brought out his service pistol and shot multiple times while Burna Boy was laughing,” said a senior policeman. HURIWA quoted a media report as stating that in the process, 27-year-old Lawrence was shot in the thigh, while his friend, Tolu, was hit in the head by a bullet and this caused a commotion in the club.

4. Floyd Mayweather gets inducted into the boxing Hall Of Fame

One of the greatest fighters ever, Floyd Mayweather was among a three-class group of stars inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday afternoon, June 12 at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York. At the induction ceremony, Mayweather cried for two full minutes before he spoke. “I don’t really know what to say,” he said. “I told myself I wouldn’t cry, but this is something beautiful. This is one of the best days of my life.”

Mayweather, who was joined by Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Andre Ward, and others in being inducted, finished his boxing career with a perfect 50-0 (27 KOs) record and as the richest boxer ever, with reported career earnings of more than $800 million. In the video, as he becomes emotional, he is comforted by women’s boxing legend Laila Ali. During his speech, Floyd acknowledged his father Floyd Mayweather Sr., who introduced him to boxing when he was a child. His late uncle, Roger Mayweather, also served as his trainer.

Congratulations to Mayweather on this milestone.

5. Victor Osimhen nets four in 10-0 win for Nigeria in African Cup Of Nations qualifier

Victor Osimhen scored four goals as Nigeria thrashed minnows Sao Tome e Principe 10-0 in qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles missed out on a place at the 2022 World Cup in Africa’s play-offs in March but have made a perfect start in Group A as they seek a spot at next year’s Nations Cup in Ivory Coast. The victory away from home is the biggest win the west Africans have recorded, surpassing a 10-1 triumph over Benin in 1959.

Watford striker Emmanuel Dennis and Ademola Lookman, who spent last season on loan at Leicester City, were also on the score sheet for Jose Peseiro’s Nigeria. Napoli striker Osimhen, 23, now has 15 goals in 22 international caps. Sao Tome e Principe is ranked 183 in the world by FIFA and had to come through a preliminary qualifying tie against Mauritius to reach the group stage. Jay Z Bitcoin Academy

The islanders were then thrown out of qualifying for fielding an ineligible player — but Sao Tome was subsequently reinstated just nine days before Group A got underway following a successful appeal. Nigeria joins holders Senegal, Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Mali with two wins from their first two qualifiers, with the next two rounds of matches scheduled for September.
