J. Cole canceled his scheduled concert at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California, on Thursday, August 27, after a member of his touring crew was killed in a truck accident earlier that morning.
The Yolo County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Jarlath Parkinson, 66, of South Carolina. Parkinson was driving a big rig transporting the rapper’s equipment on Interstate 5 in Yolo County, between the Zamora and Dufour areas northwest of Woodland, when the accident occurred just after 6:05 a.m. local time.

Authorities told CBS News Sacramento that the driver drifted onto the right shoulder and lost control when attempting to return to the road, causing the truck to overturn. No other vehicles were involved.
“It’s unknown at this time; it may have been a distraction or falling asleep. Unfortunately, the solo occupant did not survive the crash,” California Highway Patrol Sergeant David Barker said in a statement.
Following the fatal accident, J. Cole’s scheduled Sacramento performance was called off as the artist and his touring team dealt with the loss.

“Following the tragic passing of a member of the touring crew in a trucking accident this morning, J. Cole’s show scheduled for tonight, August 27, at Golden 1 Center has been canceled,” a spokesperson for the arena said in a statement posted to Facebook, which Live Nation also shared.
“Our thoughts are with the crew member’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Guests who purchased Sacramento tickets through Ticketmaster will be refunded automatically. Remaining guests can request refunds at the original point of purchase.

Thursday’s canceled performance was part of J. Cole’s “The Fall-Off” World Tour, a run of more than 40 shows scheduled between August 29 and December 12, ending in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Despite the cancellation in Sacramento, the remainder of the tour is expected to proceed. Cole still has several upcoming California dates on the schedule, including Oakland on August 30 for two separate shows, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on September 1, and Intuit Dome in Inglewood on September 3.
J. Cole’s Representatives Have Yet to Comment
The California Highway Patrol was contacted for comment at the time of the Sacramento Bee’s initial report. Representatives for J. Cole did not immediately respond to media requests for comment.
The cancellation highlights the reality of what the touring industry rarely discusses publicly: the large number of crew members, drivers, and production workers who make large-scale concerts possible and travel extensively under conditions that carry real physical risk.
Parkinson was 66 years old. He was doing his job in the early hours of the morning when the accident occurred.
