Nigerian men’s fashion hasn’t been left out of the wave of growth that has hit the country’s fashion industry in recent years. No longer are men limited to standard traditional designs as style options are more diverse and impressive. And this goes for everything from casual English-inspired looks to native and traditional attires.

With the sentient understanding of the need to protect our cultural heritage, men and women alike across Nigeria have continued to nurse an interest in traditional attires. And in the Nigerian men’s fashion scene, the Agbada has managed to remain a favourite. In Nigeria and other parts of West Africa, the Agbada is worn to special occasions because of its historically noble aura.

Usually large and overflowing, the Agbada set is typically designed as a three-piece outfit comprising of an embroidered loose gown (the boubou) worn over a pair of tie-up trousers that tapers towards the ankles (the sokoto) and a long-sleeved shirt / fitted kaftan. The three pieces are usually of the same colour or related colours. Traditionally, the Agbada was made from cotton fabric but contemporary designs are often made using silk-like materials.

The embroidery is the most interesting part of an Agbada look as designers take the opportunity to show off their craftsmanship with their embroidery skills. However, some modern designs have been seen to replace the embroidery with other details like buttons.

Take a look at how celebrities and influencers have styled the prestigious attire…
