The Armani Group has officially chosen Italian designer Dario Vitale to steer the creative direction of Emporio Armani and oversee Giorgio Armani Accessories. This announcement arrives precisely one year after the passing of legendary founder Giorgio Armani, signaling a significant change for the storied brand. Vitale enters this historic role immediately, making him the first external designer ever appointed to lead an Armani line.

With the appointment, the global fashion community is witnessing a defining moment in Armani’s evolution as the storied house embarks on a new chapter of creative leadership. Vitale brings a wealth of high-profile experience from his recent tenures at Miu Miu and Versace, preparing him to introduce a contemporary perspective while managing the legacy of one of fashion’s most influential names.

For more than five decades, Armani’s creative identity was shaped by one uncompromising vision: that of its founder, Giorgio Armani. His death in September 2025, at the age of 91, marked the end of an extraordinary era and raised an inevitable question for the Milanese fashion house: who, if anyone, could carry its creative legacy forward without simply replicating it?

During the months that followed, the transition remained firmly within Armani’s established inner circle. Longtime design deputies, including Giorgio Armani’s niece, Silvana Armani, and menswear chief, Leo Dell’Orco, continued to oversee the brand’s core creative direction, preserving the continuity that had defined the house for generations.

The appointment of Dario Vitale signals a decisive departure from that tradition. By naming Vitale creative director of Emporio Armani while placing him in charge of Giorgio Armani Accessories, the Armani Group has opened its creative leadership to an outsider for the first time since the house’s founding in 1975.

Vitale arrives with a distinctly fresh perspective, marking a change in how Armani intends to negotiate the tension between heritage and reinvention. Rather than attempting to preserve the founder’s vision unchanged, the house is entrusting one of its labels to a designer whose career has been built outside the Armani ecosystem.

Yet the break is not a wholesale rupture. Silvana Armani and Leo Dell’Orco will continue to oversee the principal Giorgio Armani ready-to-wear collections, sustaining continuity at the heart of the house even as Emporio Armani enters a new creative chapter.

That transition will become particularly visible on September 24, 2026, when the pair present their final co-ed Emporio Armani collection at Armani/Teatro. From that point, Vitale assumes the creative reins, allowing him to define the label’s next aesthetic direction from the outset.

The Resilient Rise Of Dario Vitale

Born in Southern Italy in 1983, Vitale studied fashion design at the prestigious Istituto Marangoni before climbing the ranks of luxury. He initially sharpened his technical skills at Bottega Veneta under the disciplined eye of Tomas Maier. He joined Miu Miu in 2010, where he enjoyed a highly successful 14-year run. Working side by side with Miuccia Prada, he rose to the position of ready-to-wear design director.

During his extensive time at Miu Miu, Vitale masterfully shaped the quirky, hyper-desirable aesthetic that drove the brand’s explosive revenue growth. He left the Prada Group in March 2025 to become the chief creative officer at Versace. His debut collection for Versace in September 2025 won immense praise for reviving raw, full-throttle archival glamour.

His stay at Versace was cut short. The Prada Group finalized a surprise corporate acquisition of Versace in December 2025, which quickly triggered Vitale’s unexpected departure. Despite that sudden exit after just a single collection, his reputation as a brilliant product developer remained untarnished. His swift appointment at Armani confirms that luxury executives still view him as a premier talent.

Emporio Armani was launched in 1981 to appeal to a younger, more energetic, and more metropolitan consumer base. It famously utilizes an iconic eagle logo and focuses heavily on relaxed tailoring, premium denim, and accessible lifestyle items. Maintaining the delicate balance between classic house codes and contemporary style will be Vitale’s greatest challenge.

In a public statement, Silvana Armani and Leo Dell’Orco expressed their sincere enthusiasm for this collaborative appointment. They observed that Emporio was born as a unique space of freedom, experimentation, and boundless energy. They stated, “We are convinced that Dario’s arrival in our team will interpret its spirit with respect and authenticity.”

Vitale echoed this mutual respect, acknowledging the deep responsibility that comes with managing such a monumental brand. “Armani has a powerful legacy and unmistakable design language,” Vitale remarked during his introduction. He added that he approaches the task with excitement as they define a new era together.

Navigating Corporate Shifts And Market Pressures

This major creative realignment occurs during a period of significant economic adaptation for the Armani Group. The brand recently reported a minor 2.8% decline in annual sales, bringing its total revenue to €2.2 billion. Financial analysts continue to speculate about potential stock market listings or partial sales of ownership.

According to the terms of Giorgio Armani’s will, his heirs must sell a specific 15% stake in the company within 18 months of his passing. This financial requirement adds distinct pressure to the creative team to perform well commercially. Managing Director Giuseppe Marsocci emphasized that Emporio Armani is still a key strategic asset for global partners.

Strengthening the accessories division represents a significant financial opportunity for the Italian luxury house. Leather goods and footwear typically generate the highest profit margins in modern retail systems. Vitale’s dual role makes sure that the accessories’ visual identity seamlessly corresponds to the youthful apparel.

Looking Forward To Milan Fashion Week 2027

The fashion industry now looks forward to January 2027, when Vitale will present his first menswear looks. His initial womenswear collection will follow shortly after during Milan Fashion Week in February 2027. Buyers are eager to see if he imports the fun subversion of Miu Miu or the high-energy glamour of Versace.

The Armani Group is proving that it can evolve without abandoning its core identity. By trusting an outsider, the family protects its commercial future while honoring its historic past. Dario Vitale holds the keys to an empire, and the fashion world is watching closely.
