Sean “Diddy” Combs has officially parted ways with one of his most recognizable luxury properties, closing a $55 million off-market sale while serving a federal prison sentence. The sale of Diddy’s Miami mansion marks another major development in the rapper and music mogul’s ongoing legal and financial saga, with the Star Island mansion having become closely linked to his failed attempts to secure pretrial release during his criminal case.
The waterfront estate attracted widespread attention long before it hit the market. Beyond its celebrity pedigree and lavish amenities, Diddy’s Miami mansion became a symbol of the legal battle surrounding Combs after it was referenced in court proceedings tied to his bail request. Now, the high-profile Star Island mansion has a new owner, closing the chapter on one of Miami’s most talked-about celebrity real estate deals.

One of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ two luxury homes on Miami Beach’s exclusive Star Island has been sold in an off-market transaction for $55 million. The buyer, businessman John A. Franklin, financed part of the purchase with an $18.5 million mortgage from San Diego-based Axos Bank.
Combs originally purchased the estate at 1 Star Island Drive in 2021 for $35 million from music power couple Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Since acquiring the property, he invested heavily in renovations that further elevated the already luxurious waterfront home.
The sale represents a substantial gain over the purchase price and comes as Combs continues serving a 50-month federal prison sentence following his conviction on two counts related to transporting individuals across state lines for prostitution.
Inside the Luxurious Star Island Mansion
Located on one of the most exclusive residential islands in the United States, the Star Island mansion sits on more than an acre of waterfront property overlooking Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline.
The estate features a six-bedroom, eight-and-a-half-bathroom main residence, accompanied by a separate guest house. Luxury amenities include:
- A resort-style swimming pool
- Private dock with direct water access
- Basketball court
- Spa facilities
- Expansive outdoor entertaining spaces
- Approximately 240 feet of waterfront frontage
The extensive upgrades completed after Combs purchased the home transformed the estate into one of Star Island’s premier luxury properties, further increasing its market value.
How the Property Became Part of Combs’ Legal Battle
While its luxury features made headlines, Diddy’s Miami mansion gained even greater public attention because of its role in Combs’ federal criminal case.
Ahead of his September 2024 arrest, Combs paid off roughly $19 million remaining on the mortgage of his neighboring Star Island property. According to court filings, his legal team wanted the home to be mortgage-free so it could serve as collateral for a proposed $50 million bail package.
The bail proposal also included his mother’s Miami residence to complete the collateral requirement. His attorneys argued that the fully paid-off property demonstrated his commitment to complying with court-imposed release conditions.
Federal prosecutors opposed the request, arguing Combs posed too significant a risk to be released. Ultimately, the court denied bail despite the valuable real estate assets offered as security.
Although the property sold for $55 million is the residence at 1 Star Island Drive, Combs’ legal filings centered primarily on his neighboring property at 2 Star Island, which remains under his ownership.
A Property Linked to Federal Investigations

The Star Island mansion also became associated with the broader federal investigation into Combs after Homeland Security agents executed searches at his Miami properties in March 2024.
Images of federal agents entering the waterfront estates quickly spread across news outlets, placing the normally private luxury enclave under an unprecedented public spotlight.
The federal investigation ultimately resulted in a lengthy criminal trial. While Combs was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and federal sex trafficking charges, he was convicted on two prostitution-related transportation counts that led to his current prison sentence.
Dispute Before the Sale Closed
The path to completing the transaction was not entirely smooth.
Earlier this year, buyer John A. Franklin filed a lawsuit against 1 West Star Island LLC, the entity connected to Combs that owned the property, alleging the company was not prepared to close the transaction as scheduled.
Representatives for Combs strongly disputed those claims, calling the lawsuit frivolous and maintaining that the seller was fully prepared to complete the deal. They instead argued that Franklin had failed to fulfill his contractual obligations and had been issued a notice of default before the closing date.
Despite the legal disagreement, both parties ultimately completed the off-market sale.

Even after selling Diddy’s Miami mansion, Combs continues to own his neighboring Star Island residence, which he purchased in 2003. The property remains one of the most valuable assets in his real estate portfolio.
Meanwhile, Combs is serving his sentence at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, with a projected release date of February 8, 2028, according to federal prison records. His legal team has appealed both his convictions and sentence, arguing the punishment improperly relied on allegations tied to charges for which he was acquitted.
A three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has already heard arguments in the case, but no decision has been issued. As the appeal moves forward, the sale of Diddy’s Miami mansion closes one chapter in a legal saga that continues to unfold, while the remaining Star Island mansion still stands as one of the most recognizable celebrity properties in South Florida.
