1. Xenophobia: FG begins evacuation today, atmosphere tense in South Africa

The Nigerian Union South Africa on Tuesday said though some calm had been restored following a series of xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa, including Nigerians, there was still tension in the air.

The President of NUSA, Adetola Olubajo, in a telephone interview, said several foreign-owned businesses had remained closed for fear of resurgent attacks by South Africans.

On the evacuation of Nigerians, he noted that the High Commission and consulate had given a figure of about 640 people who were scheduled to return, adding that the first batch of about 320 people would leave on Wednesday (today) around 9 am.

Olubajo said, “We believe that more people will still show interest. We want the kind of gesture that has been shown by Air Peace to be extended by other well-meaning Nigerians or aviation operators because those that are willing to leave should be given the opportunity.

2. Mugabe’s body leaves Singapore for Zimbabwe

The body of Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe has left Singapore, where he died last week, for burial in his home country. Earlier, a police motorcade had escorted a hearse and other vehicles to the airport from the funeral parlour where his body had been held after his death last week.

Mr Mugabe, who was 95, had been receiving hospital treatment in the city state. Hundreds of people are expected to gather at the airport in the capital, Harare, on Wednesday afternoon for the arrival of the plane carrying his body. His remains will lie in state for two days to allow the public to pay their respects.

His family members reportedly said his dying wish was to be buried in his rural home and did not want those who ousted him from power in November 2017 to preside over his funeral.

3. Trump fires John Bolton as national security adviser

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday forced out John Bolton, his hawkish national security adviser with whom he had significant disagreements on Iran, Afghanistan and a cascade of other global challenges.

The two men offered opposing accounts on Bolton’s less than friendly departure, a leave-taking example of what had been a fractious relationship almost from the start.

I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration,” Trump tweeted.

I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week,” he added.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals as Portugal beat Lithuania in Euro 2020 qualifiers

Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals as Portugal beat Lithuania in Euro 2020 qualifiers. The Juventus forward has now scored 93 international goals, 16 behind Iran legend Ali Daei’s world record. He scored an early penalty, before Vytautas Andriuskevicius equalized.

Ronaldo’s 20-yard shot went in off the head of Lithuania goalkeeper Ernestas Setkus and he scored two more from Bernardo Silva passes, before William Carvalho’s injury-time fifth. The result keeps Portugal in an automatic qualifying place, five points behind Group B leaders Ukraine.

It was an eighth international hat-trick for 34-year-old Ronaldo, who also scored four against Andorra in 2016.
