Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s “God of War” TV series, replacing Ryan Hurst after the actor suffered an on-set injury that required surgery. The casting makes Bautista the new face of one of gaming’s most iconic characters as the highly anticipated adaptation prepares to resume production this fall.
The news comes months after Ryan Hurst was announced as the live-action Kratos and began filming the series in Vancouver. Hurst’s departure is a result of a bicep injury sustained while performing a stunt in June. The injury forced Amazon, MGM Studios, and Sony Pictures Television to recast the central role as production moves forward.

Bautista, 57, has closed a deal to play Kratos and is now listed among the cast of the upcoming series. His casting brings an actor with plenty of experience in physically demanding roles to the part of the Spartan warrior and former Greek god.
The actor’s professional wrestling background is also expected to work in his favor. Kratos is one of the most physically imposing characters in the “God of War” franchise, and Bautista has spent much of his career performing physically demanding roles on screen.
His recent preparation for the upcoming “Highlander” movie also means Bautista has already been working on the kind of physical transformation required for the role of Kratos. With production expected to restart in October, his current physique could help shorten the preparation time needed for the role.
Why Was Ryan Hurst Recast?

Ryan Hurst’s exit from the “God of War” TV series happened after he tore his bicep while performing a stunt during production in late June. The injury required surgery, and his recovery timeline unfortunately became incompatible with the series’ filming schedule.
Hurst had only been attached to the role for several months. His casting was announced in January 2026, and the actor had expressed his excitement about taking on the character after previously starring as Thor in “God of War Ragnarök.”
The actor also underwent a very obvious physical transformation for the role, reportedly gaining around 40 pounds of muscle to play Kratos.
Production had already filmed four episodes when the injury occurred. However, the series is now expected to start over rather than continue using the footage shot with Hurst.
“God of War” Production Starts Again
The recasting will lead to extensive reshoots, with production expected to restart in Vancouver in mid-October. According to reports, none of the footage filmed during the original production will be used in the new version.
Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed the first two episodes during the initial shoot, is expected to return to helm those episodes again with Bautista in the lead role. The production is still working toward its previously planned two-season order.
The timing of the reshoots is also important because Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, has been growing since the original production began. Refilming the material allows the series to maintain continuity between Kratos and his son.

The “God of War” television adaptation is based on the popular PlayStation video game franchise and follows the events of the more recent games, which switched the story from Greek to Norse mythology.
The series tells the story of Kratos and his 10-year-old son, Atreus, as they travel to fulfill the final wish of Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother. Their mission to spread her ashes becomes a dangerous journey through a world populated by powerful gods and mythical creatures.
According to the series’ official logline, Kratos wants to teach Atreus how to become a better god, while his son pushes him to become a better human. Their complicated relationship is expected to form the emotional center of the show.
The Rest of the Cast
David Bautista will join an ensemble that includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Teresa Palmer as Sif.
The cast also features Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, Sonya Walger as Freya, Island Austin as Thrud, Ben Chapple as Magni, Louis Cunningham as Modi, and Evelyn Miller as Gna.
Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, with the series produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions.

The role of Kratos getting recast from Ryan Hurst to David Bautista gives the “God of War” series a dramatically different lead just as the series enters a crucial stage of production. While Hurst had already begun interpreting Kratos his way, Bautista will now have the opportunity to make the character his own.
For fans who have followed the project since its announcement, the recasting adds another unexpected turn to the adaptation. The story, however, remains focused on the same central relationship between Kratos and Atreus.
Amazon has not yet announced a premiere date for “God of War.”
