rmpit rash might not happen to everyone, but when it does, it leaves its distinct mark. It gets all red and irritated and sometimes leads to hyperpigmentation. And if glass skin is something you take seriously, you understand why armpit rash shouldn’t be given a pat on the back. Before seeking a cure, the cause should be brought to light. This is the best way to prevent annoying underarm rashes.

What are the causes of armpit rash?

Here are some of the causes of armpit rash:

  • Candidiasis: This is a fungal infection caused by a type of yeast called candida that affects various parts of the body, including the armpits. Being that the armpits are usually warm and moist, it creates an ideal environment for yeast to thrive. When candida yeast overgrows in this area, it can lead to an infection. Hence, the red and itchy reactions in the armpit.
  • Friction and chafing: These are common causes of armpit rash. It happens when your armpit skin rubs together or against your clothing, which can make your skin irritated and red with a mild burn. This tends to happen in hot weather or if your clothes are rough. To prevent it, wear comfortable, breathable clothing, and also consider using powder to reduce friction.
  • Allergic reactions: Allergies can also cause armpit rashes. This is when your skin gets upset with something it doesn’t like, such as a new deodorant, soap, or fabric.
  • Skin infections: Infections can cause armpit rashes because germs like bacteria, fungi (like candida), and [sometimes] viruses get into your armpit skin. When they invade, your skin reacts with redness and irritation, resulting in a rash. Common skin infections that can lead to armpit rashes include bacterial infections (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus), fungal infections (like Candida), viral infections (less common), and conditions like folliculitis, where hair follicles become infected.
  • Underarm shaving: When you shave, the razor can irritate the delicate skin in your armpits. This irritation can make your skin red, itchy, and uncomfortable. The act of shaving can also create tiny cuts or nicks in the skin which may introduce bacteria, leading to irritation or infection.
  • Sensitivity: There are times when armpit rashes happen because your skin in that area is very sensitive. This sensitivity can be triggered by certain ingredients in deodorants or antiperspirants or even the fragrances they contain. When your skin doesn’t agree with these products, it can react with redness, itchiness, or irritation, resulting in a rash.
  • Poor hygiene: This simply means not keeping your armpits clean and dry. When you neglect to wash or maintain your armpits properly, it can lead to armpit rashes. The skin in your armpits can collect sweat, dirt, and bacteria throughout the day. Failure to maintain good hygiene practices can trigger a build-up and cause skin irritation, redness, and eventually a rash.

How to prevent armpit rashes

Below are some effective ways to prevent armpit rashes:

  • Maintain good hygiene: Wash your armpits daily with soap and water, and dry them thoroughly. Clean armpits are happy armpits.
  • Choose the right products: Be careful with deodorants and antiperspirants. If your skin is sensitive, use gentle, fragrance-free products.
  • Wear comfortable clothes: Wear breathable, loose-fitting clothes. This helps reduce friction and sweating.
  • Shave with care: When you shave, use a clean, sharp razor, and apply shaving cream to protect your skin. Go gently!
  • Powder power: Using talcum or cornstarch powder can help reduce friction and keep your armpits dry.
  • Stay dry: After exercise or a sweaty day, change into fresh, dry clothes to avoid irritation.
  • Check for allergies: If you suspect allergies, test new products on a small area first to see how your skin reacts.
