Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are making one of their oddest real-life rumors the focus of their next project. Apple TV just released the first trailer for “Brothers,” an eight-episode comedy where the longtime friends play fictional versions of themselves and explore the idea that they might be biological brothers. The show takes a rumor that has followed them for years and uses it as the basis for a wild family comedy.
The series brings McConaughey and Harrelson back together on screen after their well-known partnership in “True Detective,” but this time in a much lighter setting. An unexpected family secret turns their lives upside down. After his daughter’s wedding falls apart, Harrelson moves in with McConaughey, and things get even weirder when questions about their parents come up. Meanwhile, McConaughey faces a different challenge: he might run for Governor of Texas, which makes him rethink what he really wants in life.
“Brothers” Turns a Real-Life Rumor Into Its Central Story
The idea behind Brothers comes from comments Harrelson has previously made about the unusual connection between their families. The actor has spoken about a possible relationship between McConaughey’s mother and his own father, raising an amusing yet surprisingly persistent question about whether the two actors could share more than a friendship.
Apple TV’s series takes this idea and turns it into fiction. Instead of just mentioning the rumor, the show imagines what would happen if McConaughey and Harrelson found out their family histories were linked.
That revelation becomes particularly disruptive for Harrelson’s character. After the collapse of his daughter’s wedding, he moves into McConaughey’s home, creating the perfect conditions for old secrets and new tensions to collide. Their relationship is already complicated by years of friendship, but the possibility of becoming brothers introduces an entirely different dynamic.
McConaughey’s storyline adds another layer to the comedy. While Harrelson is dealing with the implications of a possible new family identity, McConaughey is considering a political future in Texas. The two crises force the characters to confront questions about family, identity, and the lives they have built for themselves.
The Cast and Release Schedule Expand the Story
McConaughey and Harrelson lead a supporting cast that includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, Oona Yaffe, and Holland Taylor. Their involvement gives the series a wider family and social world beyond its central duo.
The show also brings together a team with experience in television comedy. Lee Eisenberg serves as showrunner and executive producer, while McConaughey and Harrelson also executive produce. Trent O’Donnell directs multiple episodes, with the series produced for Apple TV by Paramount Television Studios.
“Brothers” is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV on September 23, 2026. The series will open with two episodes before moving to a weekly Wednesday release schedule, with the eighth and final episode arriving on November 4.
For McConaughey and Harrelson, the appeal is obvious. Their real friendship has always given their collaborations an easy chemistry, and Brothers builds an entire comedy around that familiarity. This time, however, the question is no longer simply whether they work well together on screen. The series asks what would happen if their fictional selves had to find out whether they were actually family.
